Sheep are a sure sign that the vast land that is now El Cocuy National Park was and still is partially farmland. There are some very old stone pens used to corral animals well-suited for the harsh terrain.

There isn't a lot of wildlife on the trek around El Cocuy and most of it is subtle and doesn't jump right out at you. That's why seeing these two wild horses was so special. Well, wild might be a romantic term as they are truly feral horses, wild surely today but descendants of domesticated horses. That said, when you see one, they look pretty wild and certainly very beautiful. This mare with her colt kept a watchful eye on us as we walked by and this shot was taken from quite a distance with a 450mm zoom lens on our walk down to Laguna Grande de los Verdes.

Frailejóns are an increasingly rare and beautiful plant endemic to the páramo areas of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. With succulent hairy leaves, they survive well these high altitude largely arid areas that are less than perfect for most living things. They are one of the main reasons El Cocuy National Park was formed as potato farming has taken its toll on its habit which is shrinking. They are certainly one of the most stunning features of the park as at such high altitudes, it is a nice sight to see any kind of plant and they are abundant in large swaths in an otherwise often barren landscape.

I'll never quite forget La Capilla. Describe in our guide as “a tiny hamlet,” it was little more than a small church, a hospedaje, and a bar with only the latter being in much use. There were a few locals inside drinking beers despite the early hour of our arrival but the funny part was the very modern video jukebox they had. Songs would stream in and invariably there would be a scantily clad woman in video which amused the drunken patrons to no end. It would have surely been quite an experience to saunter in and have a beer but it's one we didn't opt for. I did have a small walk around “town” to grab a shot of the church, set off well in the very scenic setting.
