Museo de Oro, Plaza de Santander, Artesanía y más
Go to the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum) just a few blocks from Avenida Jimenez by the Plaza de Santander. It's about 30,000 pieces of gold artefacts etc. from Colombia including the real artefact of the "Legend of El Dorado". It's hard to fathom the immense worth of the collection in the Gold Museum, both actual worth of the gold and the historical and anthropological etc. worth of the collection.
I love that Plaza, has a great big fountain. Birds like you see in pics of European plazas... shoe-shiners and others.. everyday people walking about or resting on a bench. It's not a huge plaza, but it's nice.
A great artesanía, painted yellow by the entrance, is there just by the Museum ~ one good place to pick up some souvenirs.
Museo del Oro
The most impressive collection in the world of surviving pre-hispanic gold work. See what it all looked like before the Spanish melted it down and attempted to sail it across the Atlantic.

Museo del Oro (Gold Museum)
A first-rate museum dedicated to the pre-Columbian natives use of gold in everyday and ceremonial life.
Excellent descriptive exhibits which introduce the various communities that existed before Europeans arrived: their culture, traditions, ceremonies, and beliefs.
Over 10,000 pieces of gold and some other precious metals are on exhibit, as well as many pieces of ceramic and other archaeological materials.
I highly recommend renting the audiotour:
Spanish - 1000 pesos (less than US$.50)
English or French - 5000 pesos (about US$2.30)
Plan at least 2 hours. There's a nice little museum shop, also across the street there's a market with many vendors that sell some comparable items for less.
This is a MUST SEE!
THE GOLD MUSEUM. This is...
THE GOLD MUSEUM. This is probably the only museum of its kind in the world. Located in downton next to the old district of la candelaria. The museum contains thousands of gold pieces from the Pre-Colombian cultures. To visit the museum is kind of walking into the EL DORADO.
The National Archaeological Museum exhibits utensils, stone carvings, textiles, gold works, and other materials found at sites throughout the country. The famous Gold Museum features a noted collection of pre-Columbian gold objects.
