  • La Candelaria - Downtown

    Bogotá Things to Do

Downtown this is the clonial part of the city centre. Most buildings still preserve their original architecture. Going around Candelaria and its narrows street is also easy to find some pictorial spots and small shops where is possible to see and buy some hand made crafts.

  • Cerro de Monserrate

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Bogotá Things to Do

I started my time in Bogota by taking the cable car ride up to Monserrate, a 3,152 meter mountain in the middle of the city. There is a church with a shrine up there and restaurants. You get amazing views of much of the city from there. I enjoyed an empanada and a cup of coffee while taking it all in.

  • Plaza Bolivar

    Bogotá Things to Do

Plaza Bolivar is the political and historical center of Candelaria and of the whole city. It is a good place to watch people go by and observe the beautiful buildings around it. Some of the most important ones are here. The Capitolio to the south, the Palace of Justice on the northern side where the Supreme Court works, the imposing Catedral...

    Bogotá Things to Do

The National Museum was founded on 28 July 1823. It is the oldest of the city's museums of the country and one of the oldest in America. It functioned in several periods during 123 years and then it was installed in the building of the old Penitenciaria de Cundinamarca, designed by the Dane architect Thomas Reed to be a prison. There are still...

  • Presidential Palace

    Bogotá Things to Do

I read that it might be a little tricky having pictures taken by the gate of the Presidential Palace, but I tried anyway. The guards were okay with it and just told me to do it quickly...they are over-protective because the Palace is located just by the busy Plaza Bolivar (security is thus beefed up). The Casa de Nariño (Spanish for House of...

  • Donacion Botero Museum

    Bogotá Things to Do

Fernando Botero is a painter and sculptor born in Medellin in 1932. Once you’ve seen some of his work, you can spot it anywhere—His subjects look like inflated balloons! (Even the inanimate objects are fat.) Several of his works draw from other artists—one painting is the Mona Lisa as a (very fat) child. Others are portraits of painters he knew....

  • Iglesia de la Candelaria

    Bogotá Things to Do

Easily overlooked, La Iglesia de la Candelaria should not be missed. If you are staying in La Candelaria, you are likely to walk by it on your way to Plaza de Boliva. It's golden exterior will certainly draw your attention if you are doing this walk in early morning light when its impressive facade is aglow. The key is to go beyond the admittedly...

  • Iglesia del Carmen

    Bogotá Things to Do

We were walking in La Candelaria, Bogota and I noticed this wonderful church and took pictures. I find out later that this is one of the younger churches of Bogota – the Iglesia del Carmen which was inaugurated recently in 1938. I have read that it resembles a wedding cake, and yes, it does. Inside, it also has amazing stained-glass windows and...
