In the Caribbean coast of Colombia you find an abundance of tropical fruits. The diverse offer of fresh fruit is immense and many of them I have never tried or seen before. Fruit vendors are found on almost every corner of the city centre and El Prado. So when you are in Barranquilla don't forget to sample some of the most delicious tropical fruits, such as mango, papaya, maracujá, pineapple, banana, orange, melon and watermelon, and lesser known curuba, feijoa, granadilla, lulo, guanábana, tomate de árbol, mamoncillo, uchuva, guayaba, chirimoya... Most of the street vendors around the city offer fruit salads and some of them freshly squeezed juices. Fruit salads are sometimes served with cheese (I prefer pure fruits) and fruit juices are often mixed with sugar, milk or water (I like them only with water, if necessary).
I had a fruit salad with mango, papaya, melon and watermelon upon my arrival to the city. Later I opted for a mango. It was a huge portion of freshly peeled and cut fruit. Pure delight!!! One of the most popular dishes on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts is sancocho de pescado, a traditional soup (stew) made with fish. The fish is usually cooked whole. The dish is prepared in a large pot and cooked together with large pieces of plantain, potato, yucca, cilantro and vegetables of the region. The typical dish of Barranquilla is sancocho de bocachico which is made with sabalo fish (locally known as bocachico). The stew is eaten any day of the week, mainly at lunchtime, and it is usually accompanied with coconut rice. Many restaurants in the city centre serve it. We checked several places before choosing one. It was a simple place with a street view where local people use to come. That particular day the dish was offered as a daily menu. It was quite obvious that I was a foreigner so a guy at the table next to ours started to talk to Donna. Well, locals are just as curious about the foreigners as we are about them. We asked him about the easiest way to walk to El Prado and he kindly offered to show us the way.
We had sancocho de bocachico. The stew was prepared with sabalo fish, yucca, plantain, coconut water and lime. It dish was accompanied with arroz con coco (coconut rice) and aguapanela with lemon. The food was good and we only payed COP 5.000 each. Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageDirections: the city centre

You must visit the 'Santander del Prado' restaurant to enjoy excellent food and friendly customer service. Typical Colombian dishes prepared fresh made it our favorite stop after a long day. Expect to spend about US$50 for a meal for four. Really quiet, great service.

Guanaba stands by Lodestar Las Flores - actually it's the whole neighbourhood in the industial part of the city, near the harbour next to Rio MAgdalena the atmosphere is nice. live music occasionally, but it also depends on which restaurant you go to. don't be disturbed by the shabby apperance. restaurants there don't like like restaurants if you come from Europe or North America or any other 1st world country. but the food is great.
it's a perfect place for people who love fish. all the restaurant serve amazing fish with patacones (one type of fried banana). unless you are from s-america, you have probably never even heard about those types of fish, but just order anything - everything there is delicious and costs about 15 000 $ (about 7 US $), but that's a lot of food for that money. ordering one plate for two should be enough if you are not used to eat a LOT. This is the ajiaco soup - a typical dish by Lodestar Be sure to try the local food of the area. Besides the fast food you can get from the streets, there are many cheap 'restaurants' (well, not restaurants in the western sense, cause most of them are open air places with plastic tables and chairs) that offer excellent local cuisine.
You should definately try the arepas - corn bread, served with eggs (arepas de huevo - the no. 1 local food in the Caribbean region), meat, and a variety of other side dishes. Another typical dish is ajiaco - a soup, consisting of corn, meat, yucca and other ingredients. Also try the buttifarra - strange little saussages, which don't taste half as bad as they may look (well, they are more or less black). And you just cannot come to Colombia and not try one of the 200 varieties of bananas - they accompany most meals, fish as well as meat, and come in different forms (mashed bananas fried like pancakes, simply fried bananas in different forms etc.). Mango stands by Lodestar There is no need to fear the sanitary conditions that perhaps do not seem to be up to all your standards. The food is good, cheap and safe.
You just cannot go to the carribean coast and not try street-food. The colombian perro caliente (hot dog) is definately my favourite fast food. Also arepas de huevo, buttifarra, meat on the stick, and tons of other street food - it is a MUST. Also try the mango slices served with salt and lemon juice...
