Tour the Castillo De San Felipe Early

If you are planning on touring the Castillo (fort), do it early before the crowds arrive. It is also the time of the day when many of the taxis are not busy and the fares are lower. Expect to pay anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 pesos for the ride to the fort depending on where you might be staying downtown. Cost to get into the castle will run you about 12,000 pesos.

    Understanding Taxis in Cartagena

Like many other tourists I always have the fear of being ripped off by a cab driver who knows that I am a tourist. However, Cartagena's taxi system once you understand makes sense and can avoid problems. There are no meters in cabs in the city. They charge, or are supposed to charge, based on an approved list of prices. This list of prices is called, "la lista de precios." Each destination or zone in the City has a minimum price. At the time I was there the minimum fare for getting into a cab was about 5,000 pesos or 2.75 US Dollars. Always ask to see the "lista de precios." The problem is that many cab drivers don't carry it or sometimes refuse to show it. You can get your own copy of it on-line. When you go to pay some drivers say they do not have change so be prepared to have the right bills ready when you leave the cab.
Having said that always agree on the price ahead of time. You can negotiate the fair in some cases but it will never be below the official minimum on the list. If you are coming in to town via a cruise ship the price to downtown in late 2009 is about 15,000 pesos or approximately 8.50 US. If arriving at the airport there is a cab stand within the terminal. Once you indicate where your destination is, they will print you a ticket and the ticket is handed to the driver. Fare is based on what hotel you are going.

For a wonderful experience, take the bus, you can take a tour around the town in this popular bus with music and of course lots to see. The journey takes around four hours and starts in Bogagrande and takes you to almost all the tourist spots including the old town.
