Armenia Things to Do

  • Valle de Cocora

I took a day tour with a good English guide and we visited this site near Salento. It is a park dedicate to preserving the famous Quindio wax palms which are able to withstand freezing temperatures. Just had time to get some good pics there, hike a little, and take in the views.

  • Parque Nacional del Cafe

This is a large amusement park dedicated to the glories of coffee. Truth be told, the hosts at my hotel had to talk me into going here but I was glad I did. There are acres and acres of beautiful gardens and a cultural show that is a cut above what you would see at an amusement park in the U.S. There are rides but you can get a ticket that doesn't...

  • Recuca

Recuca is a finca (coffee farm) about 20 minutes from Armenia where they patiently take you through the steps of making coffee in about 90 minutes. They even let you pick the beans and drink the final product. If you come to this region, you likely have some interest in coffee and this place is a great way to learn about it.

Salento is a little 'pueblo paisa' a short ways north of Armenia. It's a charming little town, though in my opinion, a little too touristy, whith practically every shop along carrera 6 being tourist oriented. Salamina, north of Manizales, is a better option to see a genuine 'pueblo paisa'. This does not mean not to visit, by all means do!

Cocora Valley, a short ways outside of Salento, is famous for its 'palma de cera' or wax palms. Our tourguide at the botanical gardens had told us that this type of palm tree is the national tree of Colombia, the tallest specimen of palm tree, as well as the one which grows at the highest altitudes.
