A backpack would certainly be the luggage of choice if you were doing a multi-day trip in this beautiful area and if you have time and the inclination, I can't see why you wouldn't do just that. Even an overnight trip to Reserva Acaime looked particularly inviting. Otherwise, bring a day pack for a few snacks and for extra clothing as the weather is quite changeable. This is a cloud forest so rain gear is a good thing to carry and more than likely you will need at least a fleece once you get up high if the sun is not shining. We were quite warm on our walk up but it was chilly up top. Remember you will be over 3000 meters. This is a fairly rough trail once you are out of the farmland start so wear sturdy hiking boots to tackle the varied terrain.
