Don’t believe everything you heard from the news

by WaRPer

This is why I hate US news, I don’t know why they’re always making everything look worst. They represent only the bad sides of other countries, just to make themselves stand on top of the world. So don’t believe everything they say, they’re just exaggerating / discrediting / … Like when some people asked me if Thai people really eat monkeys!! It’s all bullsh*t!!Everything’s alright over here in Colombia. I’m not arguing that there’re some sorts of political terrorism going on in this country, but believe me it’s not as horrifying as the news keep telling you. Just be a little more cautious and you will NEVER EVER be in trouble. Colombia is a beautiful country, yet not much discovered (by tourists) and Colombian are also among the friendliest people in the world!! Though I know Colombia will never gonna be a tourist destination, but I still want to see more people coming to this country,...

Colombian coffee

The easy contact with the town's people, their kindness and their great pleasure in talking about life in general. If you speak a bit of Spanish and show that you're interested in their opinion, you'll meet many articulate people and you'll spend great moments! My most interesting conversation was with a shoeshiner and his customer. School kids ran over to the bench where I was sitting and were acting crazy, shouting "Hello Speak English? Wa Wa Wa Baby Yeah!" and speaking an unintelligible garble. I told them in Spanish that I did not speak English but French and that startled them. The guy having his shoes shined told them that they were not making him proud and that they could speak to me in Spanish, to make a more favourable impression. They all behaved normally after that. And I went on talking to shoeshiner and customer for a while. The Spanish in Cartagena was easier for me to...

ATM - Cheat Sheet

by irvbur

Although ATM machines are to be found all over, the transaction is always in local currency. BE PREPARED. For example, do not go up to an ATM and think you'd like to withdraw $500 worth of local currency. You first must know the amount in local currency that $500 will buy. I always carry a currency cheat sheet when travelling. In addition to ATM transactions, it's also easier to bargain and make purchases. For a cheat sheet go to to http://www.oanda.com/cgi/convert/cheatsheet

Not everyone speaks English

by irvbur

Do not assume the cab drivers speak English. Have someone at the hotel desk write out your destination(s) in the local language on the back of the hotels card. Write the same thing in English on the front of the card. Use a separate card for each place you want to visit. Show the card to the taxi or bus driver. Make sure you have the name & address of your hotel written in the local language. Keep the cards, they make great momentos.

CARTAGENA DE INDIAS.

by almogaver

I only was in the north, around Cartagena de Indias, but Ican really tell you that with the only visit to this city is enough to cross the Atlantic. Please, take a walk along the sea, from the new part, tothe old city.If it´s possible don´t be affraid to take a bus, here named 'Chivas' and go with the other people. Don´t forget to take a taxi-please be sure is a safe one-and ask the man inside to take you to a little village in the coast. Spend a day with him and , don´t worry, you´llpay perhaps only 20 US dollars for all. The different way of life from those who are from thereand those who are tourist. We were in a five stars hotel, the waitress of our room didn´t have water to take a shower, she only had two hours a day....and I suspect she was happier than me. But if you forget all this for a while Colombia couldbe the adventure of your life. The colour of the sea, the fantastic...

Enjoy a different ice cream!!

by almogaver

I can remember very well the face of many tourist whenwe could be near our first ice-man, carring his oldand wood made fridge. It was a kind of bicycle witha big box in front of. From there he draw out a pice of pure ice....then, he break it, put into a paperglass, and finally asked to the tourist: ' what kind of ice-cream do you want?...' Of course, the customer said:'orange', or 'lemon', and the man put some kind of juice over the ice as the customer wanted..... Well, all really different for an european.

One of the most beautiful cities in the world

by AndreSTGT

Oh yes, Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and trekking to Ciudad Perdida is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, oh, and the beaches of Tayrona NP are paradise. But i've seen only a small part of the country and i'm longing to go back one day and explore the rest. For now i can only hope that peace will finally come to Colombia, the people deserve it, they have suffered enough. Sorry, but that's private (he,he...)

Cartagena

by luiggi

Cartagena is a living museum of 16th and 17th century architecture, where flowers spill out of elegant balconies, horses with carriages clip-clop through narrow streets and visitors spend the evening relaxing on cobbled plazas at outdoor cafes.

The San Pedro Claver Church

by luiggi

The San Pedro Claver Church was built by the Jesuits in 1603 and later renamed for a canonized Spanish monk, who had served in the monastery connected to the church. Known as the Apostle of the Slaves, San Pedro Claver fed and ministered to the newly arrived slaves in Cartagena for 44 years. San Pedro Claver baptized and taught more than 300,000 African slaves during his life.

Cartagena de Indias

by luiggi

Cartagena de Indias is one the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere, having been founded by the Spanish conquistador Don Pedro de Heredia in 1533. Later when gold and emeralds were found in the interior of the country these were funnelled through Cartagena, and King Felipe ll of Spain ordered a protective bullwarked wall to be built around the town to protect such treasures from attacks by pirates and privateers. After Sir Francis Drake took and sacked the city in 1686, the system of walls, ramparts and fortresses was enlarged and strengthened.
