Pesos colombianos

by Ossi.P

Colombias money is the Colombian Peso. The actual exchange rate is about $2.700 pesos per US$, but may rise very quickly. There are bills of 50.000, 20.000, 10.000, 5.000, 2.000 and (new!) 1.000 pesos.Coins are 1.000, 500, 200, 100 and 50 pesos. There are also still coins of 20 and 10 pesos in circulation, but normally prices are in steps of 50 pesos or you accept to donate the rest. But if you insist to get your 10 peso change you'll get one of those coins. There have been many fake $1.000 coins, so that the new $1.000 bill has been created.Try not to accept 1.000 peso coins and if you got one to spend it the first chance you have.Don't rely on them, as easily someone won't accept it...Normally it's no problem to pay with them, but as always in Colombia: "You never know..."

Cartagena: Cartagena de...

by frqtflyr

Cartagena: Cartagena de Indias is legendary both for its history and its beauty. It has been immortalized on countless canvases, glorified in hundreds of books and had its every detail photographed a million times as Colombia's most fascinating city, it deserves every one of these tributes. The walled old town of this fortified Spanish colonial port is a gem. It's packed with churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces and noble mansions with overhanging balconies. It pays to just wander through the "old town" seeing some of the more interesting highlights like, The Palacio de la Inquisición; The colonial mansion Casa del Marqués de Valdehoyos; and the lovely port of Cartagena on the Bahía de las Ánimas. The less touristy Getsemaní, the outer walled town, also has charming pockets but is not so well-preserved. Nearby, there are a handful of impressive Spanish forts, like the...

Go fishing!

by depresno

Fishing is a relaxing hobby, and its very nice to spend some time away from the beach. Too bad we didnt get any fish.... I would recommend that you go with an organized fishing tour. We rented a private boat (USD 100 for a day). But the driver obviesly didnt know anything about fishing or how to use the equipment (which he had borrowed...)

The Boca Grande beach is worth a visit. Of all the beaches I prefer this one (on the main land), even if its a bit crowded and theres a lot of vendor's trying to sell you just about anything you dont need.

Flying to Cartagena you get an amazing sight of this 'half-island' made right on the edge of the water. This is 'Boca Grande' which is the area of the city with the most popular beaches and international hotels. This area though is newest part of the city with nothing to remind you that you are visiting historical city.

Click the map to enlarge. I've visited most areas of Colombia, except the Llanos in the East. I spent most of my time in Bogota, situated at 2640 m (8,660 ft) on the edge of the plateau of Colombia's East Cordillera. I visited Barranquilla and Cartagena in the North, Cali, Buenaventura, and Popayan in the Southwest, and Leticia in the Amazon Forest. Driving down the Cordillera from Bogota to spend weekends on a finca in the countryside. It's amazing how the climate and the vegetation change within a two-hour drive from Bogota! You suddenly find yourself in a tropical world, so different from Bogota...

by kucha

Cartagena is on of the most interesting cities in South America and is a must-see, with a rich history beginning in the 16th century when the city was actually an island. Later it was blocked -- for military reasons -- by the Spaniards and still has a beautiful fortress (san Felipe de Barajas) towering hundreds of feet above the ocean. Be sure to see the touristy, but worthwhile sound and light show at the fortress. It is offered several nights each week.

Visit Bogota. Most international flights will arrive here and it's worth staying around a few days. The old town (Plaza de Bolivar) with its narrow streets, colonial-style government buildings, cathedrals and old townhouse is charming. Don't miss the Museum of Colonial Art and the Mansion of the Marquis of San Jorge (for pre-Colombian art). The city is quite cosmopolitan, with a great nightlife, Enjoy the dancing clubs, local music and world-class restaurants.

by Robin26

go to Cartegena. I know it will be at the top of most peoples tourist list but it is an absolute must. Andres Carne de Res... it is a BIG nightclub / restaurant in Chia outside of Bogota and it is amazing. The atmosphere is unique. Evenings start with fantastic food - the speciality is steak in hideous quantities! Things gradually warm up and you will usually find yourself dancing on a table by 3 o'clock in the morning! Make a reservation and be on time. Sort out your travel carefully as the road back can be dodgy late at night especially if people have drunk a bit too much.
