Cartagena is full of history,...

by guada44

Cartagena is full of history, and fabulous Spanish architecture from hundreds of years ago. The fort is amazing and open to the public. The design of it, especially to someone involved in engineering today, is a masterpiece of utility, strength and the ability to 'hunker down' in it for weeks during battle. Fresh air, food stores, munitions. They thought of it all. The 'Old City' within the wall is very interesting. As you walk by the Inquisition building, you can almost hear the screams of the tortured people there. That is spooky but the rest of the Old City is not. It's laid out exactly the same as the 'Viejo Ciudad' (Old City) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Santa Fe, and New Mexico. Those Spaniards were certainly consistent! There are beautiful and simple fishing islands one or two hours by boat (yacht) from Cartagena where you can stop for an outdoor lunch and drinks. The water is...

pptanner's General Tip

by pptanner

The helpfulness of the people I encountered in my business travels stands out in my memory. Notably, one night when I checked in late and asked the hotel reception staff if it might be possible to find a place open to buy stockings before an early morning meeting the next day, I was informed that the adjacent shopping center was closed, but they would do their best to find some. Fifteen minutes later, a hotel employee was knocking on my door with the much-needed stockings! This is one small example of the Colombian hospitable attitude that has always stood out in my mind.Additionally, I love the coffee, the beautiful walled city of Cartagena, the wonderful ajiaco and the jewelry.

Amazingly open and giving people. Fascinating culture. Well worth going against all the travel warnings issued by the U.S. government. Trekking 3 days into the coastal jungle near Santa Marta to visit the 'Lost City' of the Tayrona indians.

Bogotá is a gorgeous capital. If you wander throught the fancy neighbourhoods, even downtown, you will have a unforgetable experience. They have a real good taste in interior decoration and architecture. Ah, don´t forget to go to the country, it´s lovely! and you must go to Cartagena! It´s a medieval dream in Caribe! The landscape and the decoration stuff.

I would go for cartagena,a lovely spanish built town on the north shores of colombia,it is a extreemly nice place, you can have wild night life if you want and go on rewarding sight seing during the day,se the old fortress or visit the old town, stronly recomended, and eat some nice food in one of the many resturants surounding a little square. My guide of course,i havent met a nicer person in my life, but all colombians are great people, very freindly and straight forward.Forget what you read about this country, sure dangerous places do exist but it is not more dangerous then ex New York if you get info on where to go and not.

Meet people!!Raquira/Villa de Leyva. Although touristic, worthwhile. Montserrate, to be impressed by the enormous size of Bogotá. Colourful land, colourfull people! Regional differences are enormous (Caribian coast vs. Andes vs. Amazone). Friendly people. FRUITS!

You must try and move around in Colombia!! This is such a beautiful country. I used Bogota as my home base staying with friends and relatives to-be and had the chance to visit Villa de Leyva. There we wandered through a thriving marketplace filled with farmers and trademen and up to a renovated convent which is now a hotel overlooking the valley. The town was full of color and beautiful people. My favorite site was in Zipaquira... the Salt Cathedral! This was one the most impressive things I have ever seen in my life! Carved inside the caves of the salt mines is a cathedral complete with the stations of the cross, tabernacle room, alter/sanctuary, choir loft, and much more. Mass is celebrated there daily, but I wasn't able to attend. I also visited Cartagena on the Caribbean coast. This is a beautiful resort town filled with the history of the Spanish gold trade routes. Cartagena was a...

Colombia is the only South...

by mnybondas

Colombia is the only South American country which has both a Pacific and a Caribbean coast line. The country has borders with Panana in the northeast, with Venezuela in the northwest, with Brazil in the southeast, with Peru in the south and with Ecuador in the southwest. The capital Bogota is situated in the highlands at 2600 meters above sea level. Bogota is a charming city with 6 million inhabitants. The altitude and the proximity to the Equator gives Bogota a distinctive climate which is often referred to as the eternal spring. The variations in the temperature are very small throughout the year. The daytime temperature is around 17-20 degrees Celsius. The nights are chilly (8-10 degrees Celsius). The other big cities are Cali, Medellin and Barranquilla. Cali is situated southwest of Bogota. Medellin is situated northwest of Bogota. Barranquilla is situated by the Caribbean coast in the...
