Restaurante Tasca Madrid: lunch in Centro

by emmet7

My opinion was mixed. My Spanish language skills are decent but do not extend to the fine points on a menu; so after seeing the place had lots of fish (of which I ate much of in Panama), I decided to order the chicken. The taste was alright the problem was that it was a big bowl of chicken hearts or kidneys, blah.So I called for 'la cuenta' and I could not explain that it was my mistake etc but then the owner stormed out of the kitchen straight to my table and then smiled and said "did I speak English?" and just laughed when I told him my issue. He immediately sent out a big plate of 'paella' which was delicious and cost more than what I ordered yet the bill was unchanged. They had a great Spanish-style guitar player and good coffee too! paella

BOGOTA: CREPES & WAFFLES: EXCELLENT ICE-CREAM

by swesn

This is a huge chain that is found all over Bogota, in major shopping malls and along fashionable streets. Most of the time I see a long queue waiting patiently for their ice-cream dose. The ice-cream is really quite delicious (and in quite large servings). Highly recommended.Note that 'Arequipe' here in Colombia, Peru is 'Dulce de Leche' as known in Argentina.

EMPANADAS

by swesn

'Empanadas' are pastries of various fillings that are very common in South America. From Argentina to Bolivia, they are available and are very popular snacks indeed. However, in each country, they are of a slightly different style. In Colombia, the style here is that at the 'empanada' shop, there is a huge spread of sauces on the counter. So many sauces that it boggles the mind. It is not uncommon to see the locals standing next to the counter and for each bite, they drop a different sauce in their 'empanadas'. Excellent choice. Note that some of the sauces are very spicy indeed.

Fresh fruit salads (with or without sweet sauce)

by MalenaN

In Colombia you can buy big fresh fruit salads (many of the fruits taste so much better than at home), but too often they put a lot of other things on the plate as well, like a sweet yoghurt sauce and cheese. Most of the times they ask you before adding anything, but sometimes they don’t, so it can be good to say that you want the fruit salad natural (if that is what you want).

Very cheap lunch - Comida Corriente

by MalenaN

If you want to eat cheap you should ask for the comida corriente - a set menu of the day at the cheap restaurants. First you will get a soup then a plate with a piece of meat or chicken, some rice, potato, beans, platanos and a little bit of salad. Sometimes you will get pasta, lentils or chickpeas. There is always a small soft drink included. The food is not the very best but it will fill your stomach. In July/August 2007 I paid between 3500 - 6000 pesos for the comida corriente, but the most common price was 4000/4500 pesos.

PALMITAS-Lounge deck area, WHAT A VIEW.: Great View of Medellin from the Lounge area.

by sfphototraveller

I had the Churrasco steak. It came with pototoe, avocado, rice, chicharron=fried pork skin.Price 21,000mil=$ 11 .The Lounge area has plastic seats and plastic tables at the edge for the view of Medellin. There is also other seating covered with a wooden table. There is also a Palmitas disco which I did not go and a covered area where the food is cooked and brought out onto the deck in which I was sitting at viewing the nice view of Medellin.

San Carbon Parrila: Great Steak house-SAN CARBON PARRILA

by sfphototraveller

San Carbon is a great place to eat its a open style restaurant. Large stock of wine and drinks in the trendy upscale area of Parque LLeras area of Restaurants for daytime office workers to the party goers at night. Excellent service. One person did speak some english during the Lunch time when I was here since my spanglish isnt that good.I visit this Steak house 3 time ordering the STERLING steak Medium. It was good. I had the Sterling Steak 26.500 Pesos.A great steak, thick juicy.I had it for dinner last night and came back for lunch the next day.

Lenos & Carbon: Great steak for food court place in Oviedo Mall

by sfphototraveller

For a place in a shopping mall food court the steaks are great. I have eaten here around 5 times for lunch.I had the Baby Beef, Baby beef black angus cut, Beet chorizo black angus cut.Price $ 11 Thats with a coke, fried Bannana, small salad, fries. And the steak is a fairly large size portoin for the price. There are other steak places next door in the mall with lower prices.

MEDELLIN: SALON MALAGA: NOSTALGIC TANGO

by swesn

Carlos Gardel, the famous Argentine tango singer, died in a plane crash here in Medellin. As a result, somehow, as fans mourned his death, tango music took off here, making Medellin a mini-Buenos Aires.Salon Malaga is an absolutely delightful find. It is lined with jukeboxes and pictures of faded artistes and musicians. The tables and chairs are all old-style. Locals gather here for drinks and the nostalgic melodies of oldies and tangos.I highly recommend visiting it.

NORTH COAST: JUICE SELLERS

by swesn

I noticed quite a huge number of juice stalls by the roads and plazas. These heaven-sent street vendors set up tables and have blenders ready for your order to quench your thirst in this hot humid Caribbean weather. Well, one thing is... I notice that people here use a lot of ice in their drinks. I am sure many travellers have read about warnings on taking ice or water of unknown sources in their drinksBut to fuss about water and ice, is like to forget about ever having a drink here. As the weather is so hot, many drink sellers sell lovely iced lemonade along the streets. Vendors even climb on board the local buses with plastic cups and a jug of cool, icy orange-juice.Just trust, I supposed.
