AGUA DE PANELA

by swesn

Panela is unrefined brown sugar from sugarcane.Dissolved in water, they form a brown sweet drink. It seems to be a typical drink of Colombia and I am not sure if it is usually served warm or cold. But as I had it up in La Calera hill in midnight (freezing cold), I appreciate the very very warm drink indeed.

SALPICON

by swesn

Colombiana is a popular creme soda with a distinctive orange color. Salpicon is chopped fruits mixed with this soda. It is served along with meals as a dessert or is ladled into a plastic container and taken away as a refreshing snack.

COLOMBIAN COFFEE

by swesn

Colombia is also world renowned for its excellent coffee, and it is considered to have flavour of its own, quite unlike any other type.My attempt to buy Colombian coffee in the supermarket was however met with some disapprovals from my Bogotan friends. They claim that the BEST Colombian coffee are exported. So, what I just bought from the supermarket were the second-grade ones.!!!

EXECUTIVE LUNCH / COMIDA CORRIENTES

by swesn

In Colombia, one can generally find very cheap meals. They are called Comida Corrientes or Menu Ejecutivo, much like Plate of the Day. Here, for around 3000 to 4500 pesos, you get soup, a plate with rice, beans, salad, meat and fried banana and a drink. Much, much, much cheaper than food in Venezuela. But they are normally not such great food. Still, they filled my tummies.

Dont eat the Cuy

by geolan

In some south american countries there is a entree called Cuy. This is guinea pig. Like in the states we eat a lot of food one would consider weird. But if you arent into rodents stay away from it. Also they serve beef lung. I cannot remember the name of the dish. FLip side of the coin definitely eat the plantains(plantanos) look like a banana and taste similar to a potato. Also enjoy the many tropical fruits only found in this region. I recommend Lulo Juice. It reminds your pallate of kiwi almost but not quite. But it is very thirst quenching and delicious like the rest of the juices. Also try an entree called tamal. Not to be confused with tamales. SImilar but not quite. Very appetizing.

Crepes and Waffles: Best salads in town

by sanguin

Crepes and Waffles sounds American, but is a truly Colombian restaurant. They've got restaurants now in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali and, as far as I know, other Latin American countries, too.Well, of course, they've got crepes and waffles (excellent), but what I like even more is their salads! They only use locally-produced food and have a good social plan, too. Great place to eat! Ensalada Florencia

Wok: You Must Eat at Wok

by ukmagicman

This was the best asian restaurant I have been to in the world and is so cheap. They have so much on the menu and the food is delicious... we ate far too much here as we wanted to sample everything The tempura is amazing as well is the sushi

Any cafe: Jugos naturales

by AndreSTGT

Wherever you are, wandering through the streets of Cartagena, or anywhere else, you will come across the sign "jugos naturales", freshly squeezed fruit juice, made from fruits you have probably never of. And they are divine!! 1500Pesos (75c) buy you a palatal orgasm.

The streets: The local cuisine

by Lodestar

The best and cheapest way to eat in colombia, is on the streets. It is also an excellent way to get to know the real local cusine. The numerous street-vendors you can see in all of the cities around the country offer extreamly tasty and cheap food. Besides street-vendors there are numerous small "restaurants" especially in the centros (the south parts of the city), which might at first sight seem rather dirty and weird, but they are really cheap and the food will by no means kill you or make you sick. Some of the foods that are sold on the streets - bolis (icecreams made of frozen juices), arepas (corn-flour bread filled with cheese or eggs), carne asado (fried meat), platanos (different kinds of fried bananas), perro caliente (colombian hot dogs), enoumerous fruit juices with water or milk(my own favourite is maracuya), fruits (mango, pineapple, papaya, mamons etc), "meat on the stick"...
