Manizales

by MalenaN

Manizales is the capital of Department of Caldas. The city is situated on ridges which makes many of the streets steep. And as the city is situated at an altitude just above 2000 metres the average temperature is 18°C. Manizales has a population of 420 000 inhabitants. The city is a main centre of the coffee trade in the region and there is a large student population. Manizales was founded as late as 1849 by people from Antioquia, who came here because of the civil war. There are not many old buildings in Manizales as the city has been destroyed by earthquakes and fires in the past. But the Neo Gothic Cathedral is interesting to see and there are a few museums, among others a small gold museum. And from Manizales it is easy to visit Los Nevados National Park and a coffee farm in Zona Cafetera.

Day tour to Los Nevados National Park

by MalenaN

Los Nevados National Parque is 583 square kilometres big and stretches over four departments; Caldas, Risaralda, Tolima and Quindio. The altitude in the park range from 2600 metres to 5325 metres so there are different biotopes. You can find humid cloud forest, open highland (páramo) and at the highest altitudes snow. There are several volcanic peaks in the park and the highest one is El Ruiz, which is 5325 metres. Maybe you read in a newspaper about the eruption of El Ruiz in 1985. It was a terrible catastrophe as the heat melted large part of the snow cover and water and mud floating down the slope swept away a whole town and killed 20 000 people.I booked a day tour to Los Nevados National Park through Mountain House in Manizales. The tour was 95 000 pesos (July 2008) and that price included transport, guide, entrance fee to the park, breakfast, lunch and thermal baths. We were six...

A short visit to Cali

by MalenaN

Cali was not on my list of places to visit, but because I was taking an early morning flight from here I had to stay a night. I have only been to the terminal, the airport and in the area around Iguana Guesthouse (so you will only find accommodation and transportation tips on my Cali page).Cali, with a population of about 2.6 million people, is the third largest city in Colombia. It is situated in a fertile valley at an elevation of 1005 metres. The average temperature is 24°C. Rio Cali is running through the city and to the south is the old centre and to the north is the new centre.I didn’t have time for sight-seeing, but I have heard that there are a few churches and museums of interest and a very good zoo in Cali. Most tourist come here for partying though. Cali is called the “salsa capital” and there are places where you can dance all night, every day of the week.

Pamplona

by MalenaN

I found Pamplona to be a pleasant town to make a stopover in. I stayed here to break the journey between Venezuela and San Gil and had more than half a day to explore the town. There are several museums and old churches in Pamplona. The town is set in a green valley at an elevation of 2290 metres. The average temperature is 16°C. The population is about 45 000 inhabitants.Pamplona was founded already in 1549, which makes it the oldest town in the region. There are some fine colonial buildings, but an earthquake in 1875 destroyed much of the city. Some of the old buildings were repaired or rebuilt, but in some places they were replaced by modern buildings. In 1810 the independence movement was started here and the town got the nickname Patriotic City.

La Plata

by MalenaN

There are no special tourist attractions in La Plata but it is on the way to Tierradentro, and as I was not sure I could go from Bogota to Tierradentro in one day (and arrive before dark), I stayed one night in La Plata. La Plata was founded in 1651 and it is not a very big town, in the whole municipality there are about 55 000 inhabitants. La Plata is surrounded by green mountains and the town is situated at an elevation of 1050 m, with an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. La Plata is situated in Huila Departamento and is 122 km from Neiva, 147 km from Popayan and 210 km from San Agustin. It said that Simón Bolívar visited the area several times and stayed at haciendas outside the town.I think it can be interesting to make short stops in those small towns, to walk around looking at people and architecture. There is a nice main plaza (park) with a very big ceibatree and a yellow...

Santa Fe de Antioquia

by MalenaN

My first intension was to stay one night in Santa Fe de Antioquia, but as I heard most people visited the town on a daytrip from Medellín I thought I would do the same. Since the tunnel between Medellín and Santa Fe de Antioquia was completed in 2006 it only takes a little bit more than 1 hour between the two cities. And as I already had visited several small Colombian towns with colonial architecture I felt a daytrip would be enough for me.Santa Fe de Antioquia was the first colonial settlement in the area and it was founded by Jorge Robledo in 1541. Santa Fe de Antioquia was the capital during Antioquia’s few years of independence, 1813 - 1826, but after that the capital moved to Medellín. Because of this, and as Santa Fe de Antioquia has not been along a main road and also because the town was declared a National Monument in 1960, the colonial architecture in the centre has been well...

Islas San Bernardo

by MalenaN

Near Tolú are the lovely San Bernardo Islands. They are part of a national park, together with Rosario Islands. In Archipelago San Bernardo there are ten small coral islands with crystal clear water around. The water has a temperature of 27 degrees C. There are accommodation on some of the islands and from Tolú daytrips are organised to the islands. I visited on a daytrip from Tolú and we visited two of the islands. The first island we stopped at was Isla Palma where we visited the Aquarium/Ecological Park. On Isla Palma there is also a 5-star hotel and the beaches looked great. We passed Islote, a very small island which is the most densely populated island in the world. Then we stopped at Isla Mucura where we had lunch and where we could swim, snorkel or go for a walk. The islands are beautiful but the boat ride was not very pleasant as the boat went to fast and it was very bumpy and...

Tolú

by MalenaN

Tolú is situated along the Caribbean coast at the Golfo de Morrosquillo. It is a small town with a population of about 35 000 people. It was founded in 1535 and the town got its name from the Tolúes who inhabited the area at that time. There are few cars on the streets in Tolú and the atmosphere is very laid back. Not many backpackers are coming here jet, but there are Colombian tourists. The beaches are not very nice in the town for swimming (they are supposed to be much nicer in Coveñas 20 km to the southwest), but the lovely Archipelago de San Bernardo is nearby. The average air temperature is 29 degrees C and it rains in May - October.
