Police Museum in Bogota

by RobyG

Something you can not miss is the Police Museum close to the main square of Bogota. Contact the tourist information and get a free map with addresses and cost of Museum. I can tell you this one has a free entry. Three floors of interesting colombian history. In my opinion the most interesting one is the second floor complitly dedicated to 10 years fight and search of the biggest cocaine dealer in the world Mr. Pablo Escobar.Don't forget Bogota has been named world cultural capital in 2007 and can offer so many interesting things to do.

Paragliding in Medellin

by RobyG

From Medellin most of the hostels offer great Tour for paragliding at about 40 minuts by bus from Medellin. It should cost about 40 eur and it really worsts. Half an hour flying in the blue sky with a competent driver who can also do the "Death Round" if you ask and you are not scared of it. Take off from a green hill and in few second can see yourself miles away high from the land. Birds obstruct your way and wind keep the adrenalin high.

ARMENIA - Coffee National Park

by elsadran

Armenia is a noisy city with no architectural plan. Every construction has a different structure with no reasonable connection with anything else. The only reason I stayed for a night was to visit the Parque Nacional de Cafe. I stayed in the cheap, clean and comfortable Hotel Casa Real where the staff was extremely friendly (Carrera 18 No 18-36 tel 741 4550 / 7412001 cable TV, hot water, private bathroom) El Parque Nacional del Cafe is a theme park on coffee with a lot of attractions. You can easily spend a whole day if you take your time. It is the Disneyland of Colombia, the pride of Colombians! It opened in 1995 and continues to grow every year. It has adventure rides and shows and a tourist train to take you around. There is a cable car from which the views of the lush green valleys are wonderful. There are horses for riding and an area with a real dimension reconstruction of life on...

How 16 hours can last 28...!!!

by elsadran

I arrived in good time. The bus terminal was busy as passengers were hurrying to their buses and ticket vendors were trying to sell. Nobody told us the truth. Nobody answered the most common question..'how long will it take?'. Well, normally 16 hours the guidebook said. But they wouldn't answer. I got on the bus, my hand in a sling, nothing serious; I just couldn't dress, couldn't wash myself, couldn't comb my hair and couldn't carry anything. But I was happy God gave us two hands....I found my seat but not empty. It was occupied by a 'sour' girl who pretended she was looking out of the window when she saw I had the seat number. I asked her politely. She looked at me not politely and told me in a voice full of poison that the driver told her to sit there. I explained to her I had the number. I had to sit in my place. I had asked for a seat on the right side because I knew the views are...

Popayan - colonial white..

by elsadran

Popayan is a very pretty, peaceful and clean city of 218,000 people. It is situated in a serene beautiful valley on the Andes. Most of the building are meticulously restored and painted white. Much of its original beauty was destroyed in the earthquake of 1983. Yet the city still retains its colonial character. The 'white City' also carries a lot of cultural, religious and political life. Many presidents have come from Popayan. Its famous University and many minor educational institutes are proof. There are a lot of churches, monasteries and museums to see but just walking around is a great pleasure. Pucare National Park is nearby and is a great opportunity for hiking exploration. There are walking paths that lead to nearby villages, such as Silvia, Tierradentro or even to San Agustin. In the Park there is Volcano Popayan, hot springs, lakes, waterfalls and wonderful scenery. It's better...

MEDELLIN

by elsadran

Medellin is the second most populated city with 2,700,000 people. It has the nick name 'the city of eternal spring'. When it was founded in 1675, it consisted only of several haciendas (farms). Those became the basis for the beautiful surrounding suburbs. Today it's a hectic city with a modern Metro system and a cable-car extension which connects the center with the low-income neighbourhoods. The Metro goes on ground level and sometimes over the streets. It's spotlessly clean, safe and gives good views. A single ticket costs 1.4$ and a return 2.5$. Medellin is surrounded by green mountains with many villages and weekend getaways. Recently a tunnel was built on the route to Santa Fe which shortened the journey to only 1.5 hourIt has tried to get rid of its notorious past as a cocaine trafficking center and has built up other commercial and industrial interests. The city has a lot of...

San Andres de Pisimbala is a simple little village just a short walk from the Entrance of Tierradentro archaeological Park. It is built in a wonderful location surrounded by lush green mountains. There are nice hikes to several interesting places of great natural beauty. There are waterfalls and rivers and archaeological sites all at easy reach through magnificent nature and superb views! The little church in the middle of it is really pretty. There is accommodation and a few restaurants to meet your needs. Bogota-the capital

by elsadran

Bogota is not an impressive city but if you stay a little more and feel its beating heart then you will like it little by little. It may be the most populous city in Colombia, but while wandering in the beautiful narrow streets of Candelaria you feel it can easily have a place in your heart. There are more than 7 million living in it and a million more around it. Its people are nice, warm and helpful. The climate is mild despite its great altitude of 2640meters ( 8661feet ) which places it third in the world's highest capitals, behind La Paz and Quito. The western city limit is the Bogota river and the east side is dominated by the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes mountain range. The driest months are December and November. June and July are usually rainy and August is sunny.Bogota has the biggest industrial facilities in the country so it is Colombia's greatest economic center. The...

Ipiales – Las Lajas

by elsadran

Ipiales is a small city near the border with Ecuador with an altitude of almost 3000 meters. The only thing worthy of a stop is the enchanting Cathedral of Las Lajas. After passing the customs check where they search your luggage for guns more than drugs you should take a collective taxi to the city. The fare is about 6$. You can stay overnight or go to Las Lajas by taxi and continue with your trip. If it's not raining. If it is, as it happened in my case, take a rest and visit it the next day. I booked a spacious clean and tidy room on the top of Hotel Le Sehñoral and visited the church the next day. The Cathedral de Las Lajas is built on the bridge over a gorge where the Virgin is supposed to have appeared many years ago. The name comes from a type of flat rock where the miracle is supposed to have happened. Now there is a painted image on the rock inside. It's an amazing sight! Not...

Tierradentro

by elsadran

This is also an archaeological park similar to San Agustin. There are statues of human figures but the most interesting thing about this park is the underground burial chambers. They date from the 6th to the 10th century. Some of them are quite large up to 12meters wide. Most have decorative motifs on the walls and pillars of geometrical shapes which was the usual pattern in the internal decoration of the houses of the pre-Hispanic period. There are also animal and human figures. The entrance is a spiral staircase going down to the main chamber usually 5 to 8 meters below the surface. There is no light in the rooms so remember to carry a powerful flashlight. They are divided in many Archaeological sites called Altos. Hiking to them is a really magnificent experience because of the natural beauty of the area. They can all be visited in one day through well maintained paths through...
