The most fantastic way to travel this country is by bus. There is a temptation to travel by plane to cover the huge distances necessary, but buses are cheap and very comfortable. The most fantastic thing about this is that you meet people, the bus drivers are very friendly, and will stop for you to take photos, etc...

Taxi and bus seem to be the best way to get long distances in a hurry, well, faster than you can walk anyway. Traffic is BAD! Walking is the best way to move around, but keep alert to the area you start walking into so that its not too rough. It's kind of like being in New York city (for my comparison), just watch where you are and use the taxi as necessary.

Colombia can be entered overland from Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama. The routes from Ecuador and Venezuela are considered relatively safe. There are reports of guerrilla activities by the Panamian border.The border between Colombia and Panama goes over a dense, swampy jungle area known as Darien Gap. The Panamian and Colombian governments have agreed on a road project which would go through the Darien Gap area. This project has also international interest as it would complete the Pan-American highway and make it possible to drive all the way from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. Currently cars have to be transported with ferries from Panama to Colombia. There are ferries which operate both on the Caribbean coast and on the Pacific coast.The road project through Darien Gap is controversial. Muy loco!!!!! The Traffic is horrid that would be about the only negative thing i could say about colombia. They drive fast, close and there are no pedestrian laws. Be very careful getting around.
