Kaki Clothes

by WaRPer

You may think this is a bit ridiculous, but for your own safety DO NOT EVER WEAR ‘KAKI’ (green, military-like) CLOTHES OUT especially in most of the remote areas and off-the-beaten tracks. This is quite a serious issue in Colombia, since the Guerillas wear Kaki as their trademark and whenever the police suspect someone (in that color), he has a permission to shoot!! This is no kidding, my Colombian friend warned me about this herself. Don’t ignore those little details, they might cause you a really big trouble!! BETTER BE SAFE THAN SORRY, right?

Highway Bandits

by jungles

While travelling in Colombia, we went everywhere by public transport overland, including some night buses, and had no problems. However, certain routes are said to be more dangerous than others, and in some places it is not advisable to travel at night. Inquire locally (or on the forum) about the current situation. Highway robbery is a reality not just in Colombia but in other Latin American countries as well, particularly Mexico and Guatemala. Luckily we never ran into bandits, but we always took precautions nontheless.Whereas I would normally keep my valuables with me in my daypack when travelling by bus, in Latin America I locked them up in my large bag instead, which went underneath the bus. I figured if bandits did attack, they would simply take whatever people had on them and not worry about the luggage underneath. I also sewed a secret pocket on the inside of my pants leg, where I...

Lenguistics

by geolan

make sure you spanish is up to par. If you are a foreigner or extranjero, you are subject to dangers and thats in any country not just colombia. Either speak it or have someone with you that does. Never carry large amounts of cash or large obtrusive or even external jewelry. The less the better. The people are very friendly, but like anywhere there is always someone thats trying to cut corners especially at anothers expense.

My friend and I were...

by thelukey

My friend and I were essentially interrogated for 45 minutes by two members of the FARC while hiking near a nature preserve west of Cali. 'Where are your from?' 'What are you doing here?' 'Who told you to come here?' 'How long are you going to stay here?' 'What do you know about the FARC?' 'What do they say about the war in Colombia where you are from?' 'What do you hear about narco-trafficing?' My friend and I both told him we were Canadians (after having been warned by many people not to let anyone know we were from the US), and we claimed near-total ignorance about the situation in Colombia. Apparently this satisfied them, because we were allowed to continue along our way. All in all, the many FARC soldiers we ran into seemed no less professional than the government soldiers, but it would just take one misunderstanding.....

Safe, as long as you know what you do

by Aig

1. Urban centers are safe, but know places before you go. For example, in Bogota, northern part and central area, including La Candelaria, is probably as safe as a typical European city. In southern part you are likely to get in trouble. And avoid the big street, which goes through the city. If you stick to those simple rules, the chances are that you are safe.2. You get better exchange rate, if you withdraw money from ATM rather than change cash. As well, some people have warned that by changing cash on street you may end up with fake money :) But credit cards are accepted in most places.3. Beggars and emeral vendors are NOT dangerous people. 4. I have not ventured out in jungle for safety concerns. In urban areas possible trouble from guerilla is a remote, almost non-existant, concept.5. There are a lot of well-armed military on the streets, but I take it as sign that things are...

Security's not so Intrusive

by MrRandMcnally

On every site here I seem to see coments about how much security there is and how many armed Police and Military you see. I couldn't disagree more. I've been amazed how few guns you se here. There are the occasional Police and Military men with automatic rifles but the guards at stores are more likely to have a dog than a gun. The security is enough to make you feel safe. Dogs and Guards, Police and Military on major roads, Local Military Units, a kind of National guard in the towns, Guard who check bags going into Shopping centers and other crowded places. But there are fewer guns than I expected. Much less than San Salvador, where every guard has a shotgun, and fairly similar to Moscow. You will see guns in Bogota, but unless you have never traveled anywhere with any kind of danger you will not feel overwhelmed by the firepower.

Traffic stops

by MrRandMcnally

If you are driving in Colombia, and I wouldn't recomend that in much of the country, You will see roadblocks and there is a good chance Police or the Army will search your car. To minimize this follow the laws, have your lights on when on the highway, and remember their job is to keep you safe. It might be a hassle but far less so than a kidnapping.

Illegal drugs

by sjvessey

If you buy illegal drugs in Colombia, or attempt to smuggle them out of the country, you are an utter fool and deserve everything you get.On the way back to London my carry-on bag was X-rayed twice, physically searched twice and I was patted down three times. And that's just at the Colombian end.
