While I absolutely enjoyed my trip, I would not go back. I felt very scared during my entire time there. Everybody there knew I wasn't from Colombia and I got a lot of negative attention as a result. I was lucky becuase I was traveling with friends who were from Colombia, but I still felt nervous. They were also nervous (for both me and for themselves). We didn't spend a lot of time outside in Bogota. We sped through the streets and only got out on a few occasions. From what I've read, the situation is not any better (and perhaps worse) than it was when I was there. If you're brave, go for it. But given the latest disappearance in Jamaica, I have a hightened sense of fear when traveling abroad -- especially in a violent country like Colombia.

If you open the web page from the state department of the USA, you will find only negative things about colombia, and every thing is true. To be honest. But Colombia has different face, once you get to know it. You can come anytime you want, but you must be carefull on the streets, buses, road, airports, etc. Road traveling is risky at some points, because of the incursion of the guerrilla groups or common delincuence. We are a third world country with third world problems. But sometimes New York is even more dangerous than some places in Colombia. If you know someone in Colombia it is best because it will make your trip more safe. People who wants to travel like in the United States, in the wild and open, here in Colombia you can do it, but must be very carefull with certain zones in which the presence of guerrilla or paramilitares or common delinquence is present.

I first laughed when my bosses refused to let me out of their sight. I realized that people who look American, especially blonde female Americans, are in some danger of being kidnapped for ransom. Despite the 'babysitting' I had fun. I was intrigued by the metal detectors posted at the entrances of night clubs like Mr. Bebillas. It is a city that is distinctly made up of the 'haves' and the 'have nots.' Perhaps what I loved about Cartagena most was the sense of danger mixed with the awesome sense of history.

If you are not a savvy traveler, do not go to Colombia. While I found it a rleatively safe experience, you MUST speak Spanish and not stand out like a 'typical' clueless American tourist, or you will get taken for a ride.

Just get informed before what places not to go and cities not to visit because of the drugs traficants and 'gerrilha'. People from hotels and tourist places can advise you. But don´t worry, it´s not what you think. Just don´t go to the wrong places. I didn´t.

Many things have been said about dangers in Colombia. At least one of the persons you travel with should be speaking Spanish fluently. Don't behave as the rich tourist, you will not tell the story....Keep being well informed what places to avoid and you'll have a great time!

Be sure to check with someone who is familiar with Colombia and the region you are traveling to because Colombia does have some political situations which can get nasty. I think staying away from northern Colombia is wise, but Bogota and Cartegena will be fine, I'm sure. Just be smart and juse common sense. I really think this is a wonderful place!!

Avoid overland travel in Colombia in guerrilla controlled areas. The guerrillas control areas between Bogota and the Caribbean coast, jungle areas close to the Brazilian border and areas close to the Panamian border.
