Puerto Baquerizo Moreno Things to Do

  • Rent a bike

One day on San Cristobal I rented a bike from Patagonia Eco Multisport on Av Charles Darwin in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to go to Puerto Chino, Galapagera and El Junco. The price in July 2013 was:1 hour - $6half a day (less than 6h) - $10full day (more than 6h) - $20I left Puerto Baquerizo Moreno around 10 o’clock. The road was mostly going quite...

  • La Lobería

La Lobería is a beach a few kilometers south of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. There is both black lava rocks and white sand at La Lobería. In the water you can snorkel and swim, and often La Lobería is a good place for surfing as well. On the beach there is a sea lion colony and around the shore you might see brown pelicans and other sea birds. The...

  • La Lobería – Barranco

Beyond the beach at La Lobería a path continues over the rocks to a viewpoint on the cliffs (Barranco). Along part of the trail there is no path but the trail goes over the lava rocks and it is there marked with small black and white sticks. I saw several Marine Iguanas here and they blend in very well with the surroundings, so be careful where you...

It was late Friday afternoon and I was on my way to the pier when I realised that I had to book a snorkeling tour to Kicker’s Rock for the next day, as I had signed up for a 10km race organised by the marine on Sunday morning. I went into the first agency I saw (Galeducation) and they told me they were fully booked for Saturday but still had space...

On the north edge of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno there is an Iterpretation Centre. Here you can read about the geology of Galapagos Islands, how the islands where created. There is also information about the flora and fauna, and the human history of the islands. Arial photos show that about 50 years ago there were only a few houses where the four towns...

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno Restaurants

  • Cafeteria Encanto Manabita

All over Ecuador you can get cheap lunch offers (almuerzo) with a soup, a main dish and sometimes also a dessert. Galapagos tend to be more expensive than the mainland so in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno I had lunch for $4 (July 2013) at Cafeteria Encanto Manabita.I found this restaurant when I came walking from the airport along Av Alsacio Northia. It...

  • Café Bar Tongo Reef

Café Bar Tongo Reef has a few tables outside on the pavement where you can sit watching people walk by. I ordered chicken with French fries and salad for $6.50 (July 2013) and an orange juice for $1.50. The meal was nothing special, but not bad either, just like chicken, French fries and salad taste all over Ecuador. Other things on the menu at...

  • Restaurante El Descanso Marinero

Restaurante El Descanso Marinero is a seafood restaurant situated two blocks inland from the sea. Here you can enjoy fresh seafood dishes at tables set around a patio. And the portions served seem to be very big. I ordered Arroz con camarones and an orange juice. The portion was huge and even if it tasted very good I could not finish it all. The...

If you are looking for souvenirs in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno you will find several souvenir stores along Av Charles Darwin (along the malecón). There are not as many souvenir shops as in Puerto Ayora which is a larger town. Souvenirs you will find are things like t-shirts, fridge magnets, key rings, calendars, postcards etc.

When I was on San Cristobal I saw a small notice outside the tourist office in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. It said that the navy was going to organizing a 10 km race within a few days, and it was open to anyone. I thought that sounded very interesting and went inside the tourist office. They told me to go to the navy base and ask there, so I did. Someone brought me inside their office building, but the person in charge of the race was not there so I got a telephone number to call instead.

The day before the race I went back to the navy base to pick up my race number, and then heard that about 200 people had registered to participate in the race.

The race started at 7.00 Sunday morning. We ran through the navy base, past the airport, along the road to La Lobería, back to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, through the town, past Playa Mann and then back to the navy base. When I crossed the line I got a stick in my hand with number 109 on it, so I guess I was the 109th person to reach the goal. I later heard I came on 3rd place among women (but there were only 14 women participating in the race). Anyway, I was very happy to have run the whole 10 km without stopping or walking, as this was the first time ever that I ran 10 km.

After the race everyone got a banana and something to drink (gaturate I think). It had been raining during the race and after the race I was feeling very cold. I stayed for a while and when everyone had finished the race a queue was formed because everyone was going to get a medal and a t-shirt. The medal and t-shirt was handed over by La Reina del Mar (a local beauty queen). I was lucky and didn’t have to queue for very long as they said all women could go to the front without queuing. I saw that there was a podium and next to it several small trophies and guessed the best runners in different categories would get them. However, after I had got my medal and t-shirt I didn’t have time to wait any longer and went back to my hotel to change, as I was going on a snorkeling tour.

On the way to the pier a woman who had been in the race called out at me from a café and told me my name had been called out as I was the third woman to reach the goal. She told me to go back to the navy base later to see if there was a price for me there. I would very much like to get a small trophy (as I have never got one) so after the snorkeling tour I went to the navy base. At the navy base I was told that the person in charge of the race wasn’t there so I was asked to come back the next day. Unfortunately I was leaving San Cristobal early next morning. The man I talked to went inside the office and soon came back. He asked if I could wait for 5 minutes and went away on his bike. When he came back he handed over a bag with a Galapagos t-shirt. I guess they couldn’t get hold of the actual price so he had quickly gone to one of the souvenir stores to get me something else. That was very nice!

I’m glad I participated (there were no other tourists in the race) and if I get the chance to do something similar somewhere I will definitely take the chance.

Favorite thing: You don’t have to go outside town to see wildlife. If you stroll along the waterfront and pier you will definitely encounter sea lions. There is a sea lion colony on the small beach in the middle of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The sea lions don’t stay on the beach but you will also see them on the pier and even lying on benches.

On the lava rocks along the shore you will see red-orange Sally Light-foot crabs, so beautiful against the black lava rock.

And the chance to see different birds is big too.
