The indoor swapmeet in...

by kika404

The indoor swapmeet in downtown Guayaquil was great. There were Indian artifacts, enbalmed tarantulas, clothing, food, paintings and anything else for souvenier hunters'. Since the economy in Ecuador is low, we could have lived on a few dollars a day. Restaurants were extremely cheap in the poorer neighborhoods and relatively cheap on the beaches. My dad is Ecuadorian and this was his first time back in 45 years. It seemed to be a very emotional trip for him. We visited many different places throughout Guayaquil and throughout the western beaches. But most of our time spent was in downtown Guayaquil at my aunt's home.

kika404's General Tip

There was this fruit called Bailla or paia, I'm not sure of the spelling, which was delicious. I wish I could have brought some back home with me. This fruit had an amazing taste. Similar taste to papaya or melon, but had a lighter sweeter taste, and looked similar to a papaya. You should buy the fruit it self or the juice, if you find it. Being a flower lover, I went on a spree of flower buying. Since all of the flowers and roses were extremely low priced. I don't think I have ever smelled roses with such delicious aroma ever in L.A.. I bought close to 20 roses for $3.00 one time, and 6 huge calla lillies for about the same price.

When in Ecuador - particularly in the capital of Quito - don't miss the Termas de Papallacta which can be reached by bus in about 2 hours. The bus ride alone is very exciting. But Papallacta is phenomenal: no less than 8 hot thermal pools each which a slightly different water temperature than the next one. Very popular on weekends so I recommend going during the week. My fondest memory would be the hospitality of the people. They are very helpful but it is still recommended to be careful when visiting the Ciudad Vieja section of Quito. Watch your pockets! The photo below was taken at the MITAD DEL MUNDO, a few miles north of Quito.

by lichinga

Ecuador is likely to be the most differentiated country in the planet. Although its relatively small area, you may pass from 6,000 metres asl to the swampy coasts of the Pacific ocean by one side and to the humid Amazon rainforest to the opposite side. The central valley of Ecuador, lies at an average 2,500 metres above the sea level. It's popularly called "sierra", in order to distinguish its inhabitants "los de la Sierra" from "los de la Costa". Two completely different souls within the same nation and, of course, both of them well distant from the Quecha-speaking, dark-skinned, black-haired "indigenas". Waking up in Latacunga: in face of snow-capped Cotopaxi volcano... and sunsets in Atacames sitting in the warm sands of the Pacific coast.

Go to Puerta Lopez, visit the national forest which is a dry, tropical forest and go to Isla de la Plata. Entering a bamboo hut on stilts, watching the chickens peck the pig that was snoozing under the house, eating a dish of rice and an egg, offered to us by the lady who lived in a tiny settlement of 4 houses was memorable.

by magicpeople

Visit Villacabamba, Lazy little village deep in the south of Equador. Valley of longevity. Excellent place to relax, walk or to simply hang out for a while. Most people seem to get stuck in Villacabamba for longer than they expect. The amazing mountain views and the particularly friendly local people who greet you whilst you walk through their community. An amazingly safe place to simply wander through the mountains on your own. So much safer than many other south american countries.
