Emerald Forrest Blues: not a place to bring the wife

We wound up with a couple hours to kill in Coca after the Sani Lodge dropped us off at the airport. We had booked our own flight rather than let them do it and in so doing wound up on an airline with less convenient flight times. At any rate, it did give us a chance to check out the little town, the best of which was having a few coconut milks while walking around. We did stop in at Emerald Forrest Blues. It's a bit of a Lonely Planet legent due to its owner who also runs indigenous tours into his community. We had thought of doing something independently with him prior to finding the Sani Lodge so wanted to at least stop by to see how it would have went. He was a nice guy and from the looks of all the photos of him wrestling snakes and other assorted crazy stunts probably a fun guide. The bar however was pretty seedy. We had a couple beers and it was obvious that women didn't frequent the place and certainly not blond ones like my wife. She said when I went to use the bathroom she felt pretty uncomfortable and this was in the middle of the afternoon! We finished up our one beer and moved on. I guess if you're a single guy it would be a fun place to go at night.

Dress Code: Ladies, I wouldn't wear anything too revealing. My wife was getting the big google in her hiking pants.

Sani Lodge Pub: the only place in town

Nightlife at the lodge was fairly limited. They had a beautiful pub but unfortunately insisted on using fluorescent lighting. I understand they are more efficient and with the lodge being solar powered energy is at a premium. But to be honest and we let the staff know it, we all would have preferred candles for the ambiance. They thought it wasn't modern enough! Beers were a pricey $2.50 per big bottle but they do have to transport it from Coca.

Dress Code: Leave your rubber boots at the door.

The bar at the lodge: Listen to the nightsounds

By the time we finished our night tour, which was our third tour of the day we were pretty wiped . Night comes early in the jungle and we are in bed at about 9PM....before we crash though it's great to have a beer at the lodge . It's a bamboo hut really ....just bigger than the one we sleep in . It feels like each day is three divided by our three excursions ....we love it
