Provincia de Napo Things to Do

  • cayman watching

We did do a night walk in the jungle one evening and saw some creepy crawlies like spiders and mostly members of the insect world. Unfortunately, it's impossible to get a decent photo and you want to keep moving or the mosquitoes will make you wish you had. Far better were the cayman watching night canoe trips. Most members of the lodge do only one...

  • in the canoe all was well with the world

By far my favorite activity at the lodge were the guided canoe trips. There was something particularly relaxing being out on the lake or one of the smaller streams. It also afforded great opportunities to see wildlife from caymans to an assortment of birds. In the more narrow waterways, the effect of floating under the jungle canopy was hypnotic...

  • The Tower

Another activity not to be missed is the pre-dawn trek to the bird watching tower. This thirty meter tree house brings you above the jungle canopy and thus on the level with many of the bird species not visible when doing normal jungle walks. There is quite a bit of waiting around involved in this type of thing so not for the can't sit still types....

  • Guided Jungle Walks

Though you could see quite a bit of bird life just sitting in the pub and looking out over the surrounding trees, you have to get out and explore to see a fair portion of what is out there. One of the prime activities at the Sani Lodge are guided walks. There are three main trails: Chorongo, Swamps, and Coto. Our favorite was the Coto trail as it...

  • Stinky Turkey

We saw so many birds . They were pretty amazing . I was taken especially with the leaf-eating bird locally known as Stinky Turkey (Hoatzin) . He is the official bird of Kapawi ... apparently he stinks to the high heavens...it's what keeps him from being eaten . He is easy to spot since he really crashes around in the trees.

  • The biggest bees nest I've ever seen

On an afternoon canoe trip we spot a huge bee's nest hanging above . We're told to holler as loud as we can " March" . Then to our amazement we here the sound of troops marching. We think it's pretty cool until we're told what we're hearing was the sound of the workers wings . Another sound and they would attack. ...it was good to quietly paddle...

  • Pirranah Fishing

Today it was gently raining and we went fishing for Pirranah. We are the only two staying at the lodge so we have a guide each!!. We learn that Pirranah found in the lake are not deadly as they are in their natural habitat and have lots of food . I was almost convinced until our guide got a nasty bite from the fish he was taking off the hook . We...

what a gorgeous frog we saw. These deadly little frogs contain some of the most toxic substances known to man . I guess the reason the guide can hold him is he has no cut on his hand. HUMMMMMMMMMM. You'd want to be sure of that!!
