unless you're stopping en route, take the plane

Accessing the Napo River is easiest from Coca, a sprawling jungle city only 30 minutes/9 hours by plane/bus from Quito. This garish town is by no means the introduction to the jungle most envision and is a reminder of how close to civilization this all is. We paid $120 round trip per person on TAME but the connection with AeroGal which the lodge will book for you with no additional charges. The bus would have been $20 round trip but with time running out on our trip, it wasn't an option and unless you're going to check out some places en route you have to make a decision if time or money is more important. Many people enter the jungle from the Baňos via Teňa since it's a popular tourist area anyway and a gradual introduction to the jungle. The way to Coco from Quito is further north and does pass some evidently incredible hot springs.

the water is the only way to the jungle

Once in Coca, an English speaking guide from Sani Lodge meets you and brings you to the motorized canoe for the 3.5 hour ride deeper into the jungle. At that point you reach a smaller stream which leads to the lodge. You'll need to switch to a dugout canoe to navigate the narrow waterway. This is all included in the price of the lodge so sit back, relax and enjoy the lush jungle scenery.

    A short flight

It is just a 30 minute flight over the snow capped volcanoe to Coca. . The plane is the routine flight fot alot of oil workers who work in the region . The attendant gave me a rose as I was getting off hummmm not sure why.

The flight was booked as part of our Jungle Lodge booking . We had it arranged well in advance before leaving home.

Coca is a dusty little oil supply town. There was a pickup truck waiting and took us to the river to start our journey.

    Bus or plane

You can fly to Tena, few flights, or you can get Ahuano by bus. A tired journey to Tena (six hours), then one more hour by bus to Puerto Ahuano, and then a 20 minute ride by boat to Ahuano.
