Meeting Catalina was definitely the highlight of my trip to Ecuador. She was a great tour guide and by the end of my trip, a great friend too. I am indeed very fortunate to met such a special girl. Leave a Comment

On the northern side of La Mariscal on Reina Victoria, you'll find this post office, which is a convenient place from which to mail off postcards back home to friends and family. I believe it was something like a dollar a postcard to the US and it took a week or so to arrive. Leave a Comment

Pollution (fume) remains a concern in Quito on the motor-way or even inside old town since the narrow streets are open to buses. A common third-world problem. Leave a Comment

Quito is situated at an elevation of 2850 meters ( 9400 feet ). Therefore you may have breathing problems . Do not think you can come directly to Quito and do your normal 10 km run on your first morning . Leave a Comment

Quito's Old Town is great for walking. Whether you're just slowly taking in the sights, people watching or walking off a big meal, the streets are easy to navigate (although they get a little hilly on the northern side) and there is plenty of great architecture to hold your attention. If you have a decent map (most guidebook maps are good enough), you'll be able to give yourself a self-guided tour in a matter of a few hours. However, walking up to El Panecillo is not a great idea as muggings are fairly common. Leave a Comment

So, I knew Nat (VTer, b1bob) would be in Ecuador at the same time that I was there, but it was still a big surprise to literally just run into him at the handicrafts market in La Mariscal. I was strolling around just checking out the merchandise, when I hear this Spanish being spoken with a heavy Southern USA drawl. Immediately, I knew that it could be no one else in the world, but my good friend Nat! He was with his friend Sergio and we were able to chat for awhile before we parted ways. Unfortunately, we didn't get to hang out during the rest of the trip, but this was one moment that really proved the world really isn't as big as it sometimes seems. Leave a Comment

The weather is wonderful. It is always 72 degrees and sunny. It is the best place to organize a trip and book a flight to the Galapagos.
Quito is a very historic city with great historic buildings and churches. The thing I will always remember is the beautiful angel that stands on hill above the city. When you look up she seems to be flying over the city and there are clouds swirling all around her just like in a painting of heaven. Leave a Comment

There are so many things that I love about Quito. Mostly because this is where my parents are from. Most of my family is still here and I think its important to know what your roots are about. I have visited Qutio so many times and each time I learn and see something totally new. I love the way the family enjoys telling us the folk stories and they want us to know our country. It was very important for me to have brought my kids here just as my parents brought us here. I hope that my children will bring their kids here and that the tradition continues. Whenver we arrive in Quito it seems like the whole family comes to greet us at the airport and when we leave, its the same thing. Leaving is hard. The older I get, the more I appreciate the culture and the people and the customs of the land of my parents. I do see why my dad left in search of a better place, of work, of opportunity. I see how the corruption in Ecuador can be so disheartening and so frustrating. Sometimes it seems like some people wont work unless they are getting a bribe of some sort. If you dont bribe them they dont do anything that needs to be done. I have seen it first hand. It sucks. Not everyone is like that but its everywhere. There is so much beauty in this city, then there is so much poverty. In a sense its bittersweet.
My fondest memory in Quito is of course being with my family. My cousins a nd aunts and uncle go so out of their way for us, I want them to know how we appreciate it. We love them so much. I was glad to have brought my dad on this trip. It had been along time since he had seen his family. It meant alot.
