Hansel & Gretel by b1bob Hansel & Gretel is a chain of bakeries, which, like Motes la Magdalena, is at a mall in Ecuador near you. Sergio highly recommended this place for dessert.
I had the tres leches which is a very rich dessert. It tasted rather like soft ice cream and was topped with whipped cream and a raspberry. Leave a Comment

Sergio and I were searching for a place where I could have a snack in the late afternoon my last night there. I thought ceviche would be light enough and taste good, but the thing was, the Plaza Foch caters more to international rather than local tastes. So, we settled on this chocolate bar in the Plaza. Originally, I was going to settle for some pastries and another coffee, but I saw they had more substantive items on their menu and not just chocolate. It is a typical cafe in the Plaza Foch. I imagine it is swinging at night and there was a pretty good crowd here at sundown.
I sure hope their chocolate is better than their mushroom omelets. This one was so overdone I could have used it as a frisbee, but it would have probably wounded a pigeon. The bread that came with it was as dry as British humour and as hard as Chinese arithmetic. Its only saving grace was the parsley flakes that garnished it. elegant ice cream since 1858 by richiecdisc This is a true Quito institution despite a smattering of Lonely Planet readers seemingly always on hand. It’s certainly a local’s hangout and popular for lunch as well as ice cream. It’s decidedly upscale looking but quite charming in an old time way which makes sense since it’s been here since 1858. The waiters are super attentive and in a state of constant motion. The upstairs area has a few balconies overlooking lots of traffic.
All we tried was ice cream but all the dishes that came out looked quite good. The ice cream is home made and more like sorbet with various fruit flavors. We especially liked the mora (like blackberry), guan banana, and uvilla, a tart orange fruit that is tough to describe. It’s $1.20 for two small but delicious scoops so certainly not cheap by local standards but they sure come out in hordes to enjoy it. Coffee House by b1bob I was originally going to met Esteban here for supper round about 8, but he had business in the area so we moved things up to have lunch. So, I got here a little early. I had plenty of time to sample their coffee and do some people watching of my own.
The coffee was the best I had the whole time I was there. It was a cafe americano solo con azucar (black coffee with sugar, for those from Roxboro). We were in a cab on our way back from the airport coming into Quito for the second time. It was later than we had planned and most of our favorite places were already closed so we worried where we’d eat that night. We were ravenous. D spotted this little place and we managed to find it despite the winding streets we came in on. In fact, it was not far from our hotel and we were surprised we’d not noticed it before. It was a garish place with fluorescent lighting so it was no wonder we’d not been tempted. But it was jammed with locals and the rotisserie chicken in the window looked great. Romantic it wasn’t but authentic it couldn’t be more.
We opted for a steak ($3). It was only $3 but was massive and filled us well. We had ordered a beer but were told they didn’t have any or so we understood it that way. We noticed they also served seco de chivo and when our little place was out of it our last day we figured we’d give this place a try since our first meal was so good. We were glad we did as the stew was just as good and much bigger to boot. We ordered a beer again and this time it was better explained that since there was an election going on they were not allowed to serve beer, not even to us gringos who obviously couldn’t vote! No picture - Pas de photo by Maillekeul The two colombian ladies are so smiling and so nice, that you could forget how much the food is simple (chicken, meat, hot-dog, with potatoes and sauce), good and cheap (2 USD max !). Les deux madames colombiennes sont tellement souriantes et gentilles, qu'on en oublierait presque que la bouffe (poulet, viande, hot dog, avec des petites patates et de la sauce) est bonne, simple et pas cher (maxi, 2 USD !).

On the last night of our Galapagos tour, we were taken to this restaurant in the northern part of Quito. La Querencia specializes in Andean cuisine, and offered good renditions of regional specialties. The restaurant is clearly geared toward the higher-end tourist trade, and is priced accordingly. It's a good place to go if you're tired of being a backpacker. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Av. More fine dining, this restaurant is located on the top floor of the Edificio Amazonas office building in Quito's new town. The views over the city are excellent, although if you're there at night, there's not a huge amount to see! The food is good, but not spectacular--you're paying for the view. Getting into this restaurant is slightly tricky. You need to take the (unmarked) back elevator to get to it, which may require some conversation with the building's security guards. This was not unpleasant, just confusing. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$21-30 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Av. Amazonas y Veintimilla

We were wandering Quito's old town at lunchtime, and walked into a restaurant to grab some chow. The place was full of office workers tucking into their lunches, and when the waitress came to ask us if we wanted "almuerzitas" (set lunches) we just said OK, because deciphering the menu was a little daunting. We were then served (1) a big bowl of very filling chicken-vegetable soup, (2) a plate with grilled steak, rice, salad, and potatoes, and (3) a dessert of fried dough with honey, an Ecuadorean specialty. Total price per person: $1.25. The food wasn't Michelin-star quality, but it was tasty and hit the spot. I have to say that it was the best food value I've ever had. Leave a Comment

There were a few local specialties that I had to try. One of these was humitas, which is made from cornmeal and herbs or sweet fillings, steamed in a corn husk. We saw signs advertising these outside dozens of Old Town restaurants, so you shouldn't have trouble finding this delicious and cheap snack. Another Ecuadorean dish that I enjoyed was the local version of ceviche, which in this country is served with a bowl of popcorn that you mix into the fish. Finally, I fell in love with aji salsa, a pepper sauce made with the local hot chili. There's a bottle or a dish of this sauce on every table in every restaurant, and it's delicious--you'll need it to liven up some of the plainer foods that get put in front of you.
