Unfortunately, I can't remember the name and location of the places I used to go with my Ecuatorian friends, but I can still say there are a few arount the House of Parliament area. By the point of view of standard tourism, there's a very well defined area where lots of traditional (and also modern) restaurants may be found: it's around Leon de Mera street, parallel to well-known Amazonas street. Easy to be found, within the modern area of Quito. I would not say it's real Ecuador, but still it is slightly different from what you may be able to find anywhere else in the world.
Ecuatorian cuisine is worth knowing! As you should imagine, real cuisine is depending upon the climate and cultural enviornment, so it's not the same to eat in Quito in the middle of the mountains, or in Guayaquil on the humid shores of the Pacific Ocean. You may find wonderful "ceviche" in Quito (fersh sea-food marinated in lemon juice with different aromatic herbs added), including the freshly-prepared ceviche de conchas negras, but the typical food you may expect in the sierra is something different: pork meat (see if you may find chugqucharras and chicharrones, deeply fried pork skins, which is a typical appetizer and even a main dish in the central regions), soups, potatoes (Ecuatorian potatoes are incredibly good and variated) or cuy (guinea-pig, is very popular among the Indians .... and tasty!). Quito by Sagespot This is a cute little place located off the Amazonas. They seemed to have a wide variety of food - from pasta to soups and salad. The service was great and I cannot speak highly enough of about how kind and patient they were with my halting Spanish.
I had a wonderful seafood salad for lunch - it was actually so large that I didnt have dinner that day! Of course I had fried bananas for the perfect end to a perfect lunch. Good Mexican food. The place is a little out of the way though, and the prices a little to steep for a budget travlers ($5 for enchiladas). The portions are small, but the food of good quality and tasty. Leave a Comment Theme: MexicanComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Av. Amazonas N42-13 and Isla TortugaPhone: 2269931

Quito Skyline by Sagespot This restaurant is located in the posh Hilton Colon Quito Hotel. Although the hotel was a touch to expensive for my tastes, I did frequent their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet on Sundays. Hours for the buffet are Sunday from noon till 2:30pm. Its a touch expensive at $15, but well worth it to splurge. The service was great and the wait staff spoke english.
Just about everything on the buffet is good, although I don't eat meat, so I didnt try the three varities of cuy (roasted guinea pig but I did take many photos of the dishes. *grin*) All the pasta dishes seemed very fresh, and the fruit was almost devine. The dessert bar was wonderful with about thirty options of sweets. Leave a Comment

Enjoying our wine and tapas at Latitud by Kindra This is a classy joint with an outdoor patio with heat lamps set on Plaza Foch- the middle of the action.
The deal is all you can eat tapas and all you can drink wine or beer starting at $15.95! They just keep bringing you food and drink until you can't do it anymore. There are more pricey options if you want to upgrade your wine but we are good with the house selections- Cabernet or Merlot, usually Chilean. The dishes: amazing bread with spicy sauce and mayo, spanish tortilla (omelettes), shrimp, mussles, curried chicken, ribs, chorizo (Spanish sausage), mushrooms, olives, camembert cheese in a balsamic reduction, the list goes on. DELICIOUS! by acemj This place's location just off of Plaza Fochs is very convenient if you're staying in La Mariscal. The fact that they advertise themselves as an authentic Ecuadorian place probably helps them stand apart from the area competition, which is mostly more European and North American-influenced. The atmosphere inside is simple, with a lot of wood and a cozy feel. They often have live, traditional music here, which was the case on the night we visited.
I had Seco de Chivo, which is an Ecuadorian classic of braised goat, tomatoes, onions and some other ingredients, which is famous because it made with chicha (a fermented drink traditionally made with human saliva - chewed up corn basically!). It was good and reasonably priced. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Reina Victoria 1144Directions: La Mariscal

We were driving around the city lookimg for a place to buy some cigars when we stummbled upon this place. Since I am the biggest Cuban food fan I had to come it and check it out. The place is on the corner, it is clean and the service is good. Find a place to write your name somewhere on the wall or the door as it is the thing to do here. Everyone leaves their mark. They also offer live music after10pm.
The food is served to be shared. You can get an order of ropa vieja for example and it will be enough for two or three people but it will be served by itself. The rice or beans or plantains are all served alacarte. That is exactly what I had. Ropa vieja (shredded beef marinated to taste delicious), white rice, black beans, and fried bananas. My cousin had the Congris.(black beans cooked with the rice and bacon. It was very very good. We came to this place after visiting the Mitad del Mundo. It is in the Posaqui area and the food is very good. The restaurant is clean and they have very traditional dishes here. My only complaint was that the service was alittle slow but it was good.
My favorite dish was the Fritadas and the llapinggachos. Rob said the ceviche was really good. My dad said the Yahuarlocros with excellent. Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 13-85 av equinoccialPhone: 2394275

the view from Pim's by HasTowelWillTravel Pim's restaurant is located on the Panecillo, a hill overlooking Quito. It is a beautiful restaurant, and the views of the city will take your breath away (try to get a table on the porch overlooking the city). It is a pretty formal restaurant, and the food is expensive for Ecuador, but reasonable if you come from the US or Europe (about what you'd pay back home). The food is a selection of various dishes, but aim for the platos typicos of Ecuador. They make several delicious dishes, and well worth it. And make sure to stretch your belt for some appetizers. Overall, Pim's is a good experience in Quito, from the ambiance to the views to the food. A great introduction to the cuisine of Ecuador.
When my group ate there, we started with several appetizers. These included two kinds of empanadas (one of white corn called "molochitos", and one of plantains), and a selection of home-made sausages. For the main course, I had a dish of chorizo sausage with potato-cheese pancakes, cabbage and a fried egg. The whole meal had a salsa on the table called aji, made from tree tomatoes. It had a distinct aroma and flavor, and it was put on virtually everything we ate. Theme: MexicanPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: Gral. Mama Clorinda restaurant, Quito by jglsongs A rustic, friendly restaurant which serves great local food. If you are going to try cuy (guinea pig) for the first time, you should do it here, since it's supposed to be the best place in Quito.
Everything is good here - but remember that the cuy is double the price than anything else on the menu. Still, by American standards, it's cheap. Leave a Comment
