    Café Eucalyptus is a typical tourist gringo bar but it does attract its fair share of locals though obviously of the affluent variety. Prices are inexpensive by western standards with mojitos going for $3.50 but when you consider you could get an entire meal and beer for that price you have to stop to consider. My wife’s tree tomato daiquiri was obscene at $4.75 but then again, where are you going to find one them in the big Apple? Still, there are times when you feel like escaping the “reality” you came all that way to see and this place fits that bill perfectly. It is a very nice setting and on the quiet night we were there actually kind of cozy. We sat at the bar but there were some nice couches over by the fireplace. We would have liked to sit there but there was already a couple there making out!

    Locals dress smartly but gringos can wear just about anything and get in. We put on our best duds but still looked scruffy compared to the locals.

    We kind of expected a German beer garden when we saw the name Wunderbar and read that it was indeed German owned so we were a bit disappointed to find a typical if cool bar down by the river. Once we got by our initial preconceptions we loved the place. It's a bit of a labyrinth with lots of little rooms and snug holes to get cozy in. It was a great place to relax and they played great music. My German wife was happy they had free German newspapers to peruse. Drinks were a bit more reasonable than Café Eucalyptus and it was busy with both travelers and locals. We stuck with mojitos and caipirinhas but it looked like they had a decent if pricey beer list.

    A bit more casual than Café Eucalyptus.

    Cafecito is at the same time a nice hostal, a good restaurant, a bar and the place to meet! It is actually the meeting point where open-minded locals wanna meet tourists... The atmosphere is unique and the stuff allways ready for a smile. They always have nice music (from triphop to salsa, alternative rock and manu chao)! Happy Hour from 5 to 7.

  • Eucalyptus is a great restaurant which fills up at night. It is also a bar with good long drinks and the place to be seen! There is often live salsa music (normally every saturday), so that the dance floor in the covered patio gets very crowded. A lot of foreigners living in Cuenca like to go there as well as locals. Mon-Thurs 11am-midnight; Fri 11am-1am; Sat 5pm-midnight; Sun 5pm-11pm --> so it's a good place to start;-) Wednesday used to be lady’s night.

    I put this place on my restaurant tips too, but it is equally excellent for a drink. Live music/dancing is on offer some nights. There is even a fireplace with cozy couches for a relaxing drink.

    Dress nice enough, this is no hole in the wall.

  • This is the one and only salsa club in Cuenca! Always stuffed with locals and some tourists. It is the meeting point for all the crazy dancers. It is actually small, but that for even more unique. When I was there, Wednesday was the best night to go to la mesa. normally without entry fee, sometimes they cover 3 $... 21:00 -2:00

    If you crave to make an ass of yourself, or want to watch others do it, then head to one of the hole in the wall Karaoke joints. They have selections in Spanish and English, so you can murder songs in both languages.

  • The german-owned Wunderbar is an intimate bar popular by locals. It's in an old building along the wide stairway leading down to the river. Lovely place to relax or to have another drink after dinner. Sometimes live music.
