Ride the best waves!
Montañita is the surfers' place in Ecuador. Surfers gather here because it is said to have excellent, consistent waves . The best time of the year is from January to April, even until July, when the waves are the best, from 1 to 3 meters high, sometimes even 4m..The winds come from North Northeast. The north part of the long beach, Baja Montañita, is the main surfing point as it has the best waves. International tournaments take place here during which the place is packed with surfers.

If you haven't tried it before or want to improve your performance you can choose to have some courses with very reliable local teachers. They say they can get you on the board and going in 30 minutes. They also provide the boards, long ones for the beginners and shorter when you have made some progress. Prices are about the same in the village but still do shop around! They start at about 4$US for 1 hour, 8$US for 4 hours and 12-15 for a whole day. Enjoy!

Surfing of course
It wasnt about futbol here or anything like that. It all about surfing.
Alot of people come from all over the world to surf here. Many major competitions are held here too.
Equipment: You can watch, or join in by getting lessons, or if you already know how to do it then you can rent a board and get out there.
The most dangerous part of the beach is by the Point. There are very jagged rocks that are very sharp, there are also underwater caves here.
Check out my Things to do "Surfing" page for more info and pics. Montanita is the most well-known surfing destination in Ecuador. There are waves that are ideal for beginners and others that will satisfy the experienced surfers.

As already mentioned, Montanita is an excellent spot for surfing. The best period is from December to May; when I was there, the waves were incredible, but I only practiced "body surfing" (like a 6 years old child I admit).
The best place is at the north end of the beach, at a spot called La Punta (the point). It may become crowded so do not hesitate to find your own spot.
Equipment: The Pacifictel in the village rent board and many hotels propose lessons.
Well... Am I obliged to do sports?!
You may of course practice surf, run on the beach on a beautiful morning but you can also just walking on the beach, having some rest on the sun and swin, swim, swim!
