restaurants and street vendors: Ecuadorian Cuisine

by lenoreva

I don't have any specific restaurant recommendations, but I love Ecuadorian food! Ecuadorian food is not spicy, so many love to add a hot sauce 'ají' to all their food. Rice is defanitly a staple - while I was there, I ate it at nearly every meal. The fruit juices are wonderful - fresh sqeezed in most cases. For a good, cheap lunch, order the almuerzo - a set menu on weekdays at most restaurants that costs between $1-3. A lot of restaurants will also have a set evening menu (merienda) too. Also a Chifa (chinese restaurant) is a good place to get a cheap meal ($1-3) and it is really tasty too.Street vendors can be a good source for a cheap snack - but check for cleanliness. Usually, anything that is served piping hot should be ok. The fruit juices are wonderful - I love jugo de naranjillo (naranjillo juice) the most. Also try jugo de mora (blackberry) or guanabana. As for food, try...

Zumbahua Market (held every Satudray morning) has many delicious breakfasts. Oh, the breakfast is not for the weak of stomach, I had a goat's head and soup for breakfast (delicious!). Goat head soup for Breakfeast (under $1 USD)

Lunch in the Porto Lucia Yacht ClubNice and quiet, and to look over the sea from your table. Cerviche de Pescado (fish). It's like a cold soup with fish and tomato and lime juice. Very refreshing on a hot day.

by vela_candela

This type of food in the pic is not available for all humans... :)In Ecuador is usual to found 'cury' or 'cuy' as a typical food, so does the 'chancho' or pig. I suggest not to leave the country without a bite of one of this special way of cooking, but I would not recommend to have a whole dinner based on this, I still don't understand the way of cooking.. so...

by clmellin

Pizza Hut-im kidding. I like ceviche but you better go to a decent restuarant and spend some. the cheap stuff in a dump will get you sick. I usually ate at the typical almuerzo joints that appeared clean and didnt have the rock bottom priced stuff. Calle colon has some good local places like this. Burgars are wierd here but okay. Red Hot chili pepper's in quito is good tex-mex. Pizza-pizza was popular when i was there also. i like the roasted chicken places alot-a good bargain with fries or rice. there are lots of 'chinese' places but are somewhat different then our chines places. but they are good. guinea pig is not all that great-gamie and expensive.

Le Petit in Banos was nice - fondues are always fun. We also ate at Rincon la Ronda in Quito, a traditional restaurant that was very nice. Other good Quito restaurants were Clancy's (American), and Pavarotti, a very nice (though expensive) Italian restaurant. In Banos, El Jardin was good (service was slow but the food was good), and Buona Pizza Ristorante had a buona pizza -- the Popeye, with spinach, onions and garlic for a good price. The food at the hosteria/haciendas we stayed at was also good. Guachala in Cayambe had a cozy atmosphere and the restaurant at La Cienega near Cotopaxi was a bit more fancy but had good food as well. Most places offered ceviche, a local dish of raw fish or other seafood marinated in citrus juice and spices, and Locura de Queso, a soup made with potatoes, cheese and avocado. Another staple was Aji, a tomato-onion-pepper salsa served with the bread that was...

Vivaldi's: Vivaldi's

by Tpenguingirl

You have to see the bathroom. It's amazing what they did with a wasted space. Everything we tried on the menu was great. The service was 5 star. For 4 of us with drinks, appetizers, dinner and dessert was only $100 Sea Bass was excellent. The potato and cheese soup, appetizer- crab shells, asparagus with shrimp, salmon. The desserts are fabulous. Chocolate crepes with a chocolate/vodka sauce and crepe suzettes.
