In Quito, I highly recommend the Ile de France fondue bar at Reina Victoria 1747 y La Nina, next to the Cuban restaurant/bar Varadero. The atmosphere is quite romantic with a nice fireplace and delicious fondue chinoise and bourguignonne. In Cuenca, the best and most expensive restaurants are El Jardin and Villa Rosa (US$15-40 for a dinner for two without wine). Both are conveniently located in the city center. The food served is international with a few local dishes. For unforgettable steaks, try La Herradura in the new city. At US$6 the lomo fino is a bargain but beware: it is huuuuge! Solid appetite recommended! In Montanita, don't miss the Tres Palmas restaurant near the hotel Baja Montanita. It's a cool Tex Mex place where all the surfing Gods and Goddesses hang out after a long day riding the waves. The food is quite spicy and very tasty.
