In Quito, I highly recommend the Ile de France fondue bar at Reina Victoria 1747 y La Nina, next to the Cuban restaurant/bar Varadero. The atmosphere is quite romantic with a nice fireplace and delicious fondue chinoise and bourguignonne. In Cuenca, the best and most expensive restaurants are El Jardin and Villa Rosa (US$15-40 for a dinner for two without wine). Both are conveniently located in the city center. The food served is international with a few local dishes. For unforgettable steaks, try La Herradura in the new city. At US$6 the lomo fino is a bargain but beware: it is huuuuge! Solid appetite recommended! In Montanita, don't miss the Tres Palmas restaurant near the hotel Baja Montanita. It's a cool Tex Mex place where all the surfing Gods and Goddesses hang out after a long day riding the waves. The food is quite spicy and very tasty.

I REALLY DIDN'T HAVE FAVORITE RESTAURANTS, IT JUST DEPEND ON WHAT I WANTED TO EAT AT THE MOMENT. IF U GOT DRUNK LAST NIGHT...GO TO THE ENCEBOLLADOS ANYPLACEI MOSTLY ATE ENCEBOLLADOS AT MY HOOD 'LA LUZ' IN QUITO. OH THE BEST FOOD IS DEFINATELY: RICE WITH STEAK AND GUACAMOLE. HA THAT'S HOUSE FOOD THOUGH.

My favorite place to eat, and this goes for all over the world, is the market place or small street stands. This is where the soul of the country is feeding too. you might get a strange stomach in the begining, but you proberbly will anyway. Go where the local go, they know.Cafe kaos in cuenca has exellent sandwiches and milkshakes. La sopa de papas in Ecuador is pretty good.

There is no particular restaurant I would mention here. There are a lot of good places to eat in every city. It depends on your taste which place is the best. The most spectacular 'thing' to eat is 'cuy'. You get teeth and nails included but it is a real Ecuadorian delicacy! You have to try!

Mariane Cafe Restaurant in BañosAuthentic provencal cuisine for the of a fast food. The food take a while, but that's because each is prepared individually. Succulent, locally-raised trout with tons of vegetables for US$ 4. Filet mignon in a peppered cream sauce with vegetables and papas au gratin for US$ 5.

Restaurant Vegetariano: Restaurant Vegetariano

by Jarne-Anne

It is a small and calm place. If you want you can sit in the garden which is very nice. The restaurant serves only vegetarian meals, which is very populair in Vilcabamba. But it is really good, cheap and even the day menu is different and original.

Lots of places which are worth visiting. Provided you avoid typical touristic places, it's highly possible you have good food in Ecuador. Don't miss the "ceviche de conchas negras" you'll be offered on the streets: large local clams freshly opened under your eyes and seasned with abundant lemon juice; wonderful! I will prepare a more detailed report of Ecuadorian cuisine. By now, I'd like to state firmly that it is one among the most interesting and variated culture you may want to explore. In general, Latin America has no large grazing areas, due to this there are no big size ruminants, a fact which pauses some difficult to civilisations fighting for proteins: in upland Ecuador the solution is guinea-pigs!

there are so many, but the hot dogs at El gordo y El negro in Urdesa (Guayaquil) are the absolute best. I don't know what the green sauce is, but it makes the hotdog. arroz con camarones, the seafood was fabulous.

The cheapest food available is Chinese (restaurants are called chifas) where you can get huge portions of well cooked food for next to nothing-I won't say any prices because the currency is so changeable at the moment. Theres a great Chifa in Ambato which we went to several times - I forget the name but its quite close to the park. Also you must have the banana cake that is sold on the buses going into and out of Ambato - it is to die for- we used to go to Ambato especially for it!

My favorite restaurant is called VIEJO JOSE. It is in Quito. Located on Reina Victoria y Colon. It has authentic food and atmosphere. You will sit on wood benches and listen to salsa music all day at VIEJO JOSE. At VIEJO JOSE'S you can have any coastal food of Ecuador.I suggest the ceviche or menestra. Encebollado is also a fovorite of mine.Try a congrejo(crab)or two. For those of you who are not quite ready for the exotic stuff I suggest the 'arroz con camaron' rice and shrimp or 'quarto de pollo' a large piece of chicken.
