Cuenca is a wonderful (may be one of themost beautiful cities of Ecuador) colonial city, with a strong spanish flavour but with all the traditions and mistery of an Andean city.
It is my favourite city in Ecuador.
For more information on Cuenca, you can see my Cuenca's page.

    Sunset in Montanita
    by CaptainAmerica
Montanita was once a tiny fishing village, one amongst many others, on the beautiful and desert Pacific coast of Ecuador.
But apart from its extraordinary landscape and climate, Montanita has big and sometimes perfect waves to offer. This is the main reason why it became a surf and tourists spot, one of the most reknown in Ecuador and probably in the whole coast of South America.
Therefore, do not expect to be alone on a desert beach. It should be noted, however, that the village and the beach are never really crowded and that the stay is very enjoyable; it's full of good restaurants and breakfast cafes, good bars with music, the atmosphere is cool and calm and it's a good starting point to more desert villages and beaches.
For more information on Montanita, you can see my Montanita's page.

Guayaquil is Ecuador's biggest city and the economic capital of the country. According to guide books and some travelers, the city worths spending a few days for its waterfront, its lively center and its night life.
However, I did not come to Ecuador to spend time in big modern cities (I may be wright or wrong but with three weeks only I considered having more interesting places to visit), and we did not expect to stop here. But I finally took a place to come back to Europe from here and we had two days quite interesting.

Riobamba is a charming little town of Ecuador, which offers great view on the volcano Chimborazo. It is, however, more than all famous as the departure point to take tha famous train to the nariz del Diablo.

    Beach of Puerto Lopez
    by CaptainAmerica
Puerto Lopez is a small but busy fishing village on the La Libertad-Jipijapa bus line. The only reason why tourists stop here is that this is the nearest town to Parque Nacional Machalilla.
You can watch the fishermen come back to the beach every morning but except that, there is not much to see in Puerto Lopez. You can however taste the flavour of a real fishing village, without hords of tourists, and the beach is nice with all the little and colourfull fishing boats.

  • Banos - Ecuador
    Banos
    by SanguiniA
Situated along Ecuador's Andes mountain chain, Banos is a magnet for tourists and locals alike. It's not difficult to decipher why, with its year-round spring-like climate, great scenery, opportunities for rafting, horseriding hiking and mountain-biking, hot springs, and not to mention the thrill of an active volcano. It is also one of the gateways to the Amazon Jungle and to nearby towns such as Puyo and Riobamba (for the Devil's Nose train ride).

Banos is actually built on the slope of the Tungurahua volcano - the black giant. It is quite active and potentially dangerous, thus the warnings on many consular sites not to overnight there. So be aware that you are taking a chance whilst visiting, as the volcano could erupt at any moment without no warning. At night, weather permitting, one can take a tour from a high vantage point to enjoy a pyrotechnic show courtesy of the volcano itself. Don't bother if the weather is not crystal clear as you will see zilch.

The town itself is a great place to hang out - safe and lively with locals going about their daily lives. Restaurants and hostels are abundant - so it is a great base to explore the area.

Buses run regularly from Quito (5hrs) and Ambato (1hr).

  • The statue of La Virgen de Quito - Ecuador
    The statue of La Virgen
    de Quito
    by SanguiniA,
    1 more photos
Quito is an impressive city - surrounded by mountains the city stretches on forever within the valleys and creeps trecherously up the steep slopes. There are two areas of main interest to the tourists - the old (colonial) town and the new town - which is where the best hotels and shopping malls are. The colonial architecture of the old town is marvellous. But the rest of the city is not really in my taste - well I don't like cities so I may be a bit biased.

What I did like are the views of the old town at night (the hostel where I was staying had a terrace with terrific views) and the view from el Panecillo, where the statue of La Virgen de Quito is located.

While Quito may be one of the most beautiful cities of Latin America, with its inspiring setting and its UNESCO World Heritage old town, it is also reputed to be one of the most dangerous. Still, as always somethimes things are a bit exaggerated and sensible precautions and good knowledge of what to do and what not to do is essential. Pickpockets are everywhere so be aware where you put your belongings. Travelling on trolles (trams) is the biggest no-no, as is walking out at night especially if you are drunk. Notorious for trouble is the Mariscal area, where at night it is advisable to always take a cab, even for just one block. With some common sense and attention you should probably be quite safe. And finally, it is a good idea to refrain from taking pictures if you have an expensive looking camera, and be as discreet as possible with other cameras lest you want it and the precious photos in it stolen - this may be a bit far fetched but its better safe than sorry.

    Santa Elena

  • Ecuador Things To Do
    by CaptainAmerica
The region west of Guayaquil is very dry, relatively barren and sparsely populated.
The Santa Elena peninsula is not the nicest area of this part of the coast and the few beaches are full of people from Guayaquil on week ends.
Santa Elena is a small town without any particular interest, except its archeological museum.
So, you're probably wondering why we stoped there, right? Well there is only one reason: because CaptainAmerica is frightened by the bus drivers of Ecuador and can barely stand a ride of more than 5 hours. That's why we decided to stop for one night in our way to Guayaquil.
This place is mentioned here only for exhaustivity and to locate a few pictures that make me laugh. That was not so bad, however, to see the live of a small town in the coast without any other tourists.
For more information on Santa Elena, you can see my Santa Elena's page.
