Mindo

by MichaelFalk1969

Mindo - ca. 2 hours by bus from Quito - is a small town that has developed into a touristic hub for activities in the surrounding cloud forests. One spectacular activity is to do a canopy ride, where one can glide through the forest on treetop level secured by ropes and lines. Mindo is also famous for butterfly farms (Mariposas de Mindo and Jardin Nataly), and there are many places where colibris can be spotted. For hiking in the area, the Sanctuario de Cascadas can be recommended, an easy path that leads past a series of waterfalls.

Cuicocha Crater Lake

by MichaelFalk1969

The Cuicocha Lagoon - ca. 10 km west of Cotocachi - is an extinct volcanic crater filled with water, with picturesque islands in the middle of the lake. A hiking path of ca. 5-6 hours leads around the crater rim; beautiful wild flowers can be spotted along the path. Mornings are often the best time to hike here as it regularly gets cloudy in the late afternoon. A very good base for exploring the Cuicocha lagoon is the Hotel Mirador (with a panoramic view on the crater lake).

Quito

by MichaelFalk1969

Quito - one of the oldest capital cities in Latin America - ist the likely starting point for any journey into Ecuador. It is divided into three parts, modern Quito, the colonial oldtown (with world heritage status) and Mariscal (the restaurant-bar-hostel-nightlife area catering mainly for tourists). For initial orientation, the Panecillo - a hill with a iron angel - statue and a great view over Quito - would make a good start. Please take a taxi to and from the hill as the area between the oldtown and the Panecillo has a bad reputation. A walking tour through the oldtown, including picturesque La Ronda - street and stops at the major churches (San Francisco monastery, Cathedral, Compania de Jesus etc.) would take about three hours. The Basilica del Voto Nacional - a rather modern church resembling Notre Dame - also has a spectacular viewing platform. Mariscal is good for eating out...

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito

by traveldave

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito is one of the oldest churches in South America. Construction started in 1562 and ended in 1567. However, additions and renovations were not completed until 1806. The cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdioses of Quito. The cathedral was constructed with an odd mixture of architectural styles. Its exterior is in the Gothic-Mudéjar style, its main altar is Baroque, its choir is neo-Classical, and its ceiling is Moorish. Unlike most Spanish churches, the cathedral has two main doors: one opens to the west onto Garcia Moreno Street, and the other opens to the north onto Plaza de la Indepencia. The interior of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito contains masterpieces by members of the Quito School of Art, including Ascension of the Virgin by Manuel Samaniego and Descent of Christ from the Cross by Caspicara. The cathedral also contains the tombs of...

QUITO: LA CAPILLA DEL HOMBRE

by swesn

Oswaldo Guayasamín must be one of Ecuador's most famous painter and sculptor. His signature style depicts a portrait of human and social inequalities with strong influences from the indigenous Indians who live around him.Faces and hands feature heavily in his works, which are mildly abstract, with bold, striking colours and which spell 'ANGUISH' in many of them. I never realised so many expressions can be conveyed just by drawing hands. Please check out 'Las Manos' (The Hands) Collection in his official website... the hands speak a thousand words.'La Capilla del Hombre' (The Chapel of Man) was completed 3 years after his death in 1999. The building is a heavy grey oblong block with a cone protruding from the top. I got this from Wikipedia: "The Chapel is meant to document not only man's cruelty to man but also the potential for greatness within humanity."While the exterior of the...

The South American Explorers Club, located in Quito is a great way to find out about accomodation, volunteer work, jobs, travel, dangers, tourist traps. there is a library and a computer room there as well as books written on trips and tour groups by other travelers who have actaully tried them. there is a membership fee of $50 but i felt it was worth it. you can also use the club house as a mailing address.

Northern Paramo

by mickybleck

From the South of Venezuela to the North of Ecuador the subalpine region (Vegetation above the tree-line) features among others the so-calles "frailejones", a species of the family of Asteraceae that look like little palm-trees with furry leaves. They look really funny. In Ecuador You can see them in the region near San Gabriel, i.e. in the nature reserves El Angel of Guandera.

Reserva Bellavista

by maryellen50

This small reserve is located approx 2 hours from Quito in the Western lowlands. A day trip can be arranged to include transportation to/from Quito and breakfast and lunch for $75 including driver. It is not easy to arrive by public bus as it is on a dirt road.. There are many birds at this reserve. I saw about 13 species of hummingbirds the day I was there. This was the most recommended birding spot by Ecuadorian guides.
