The myriads of bus lines in...

by flyingpig

The myriads of bus lines in Ecuador are the most convenient way of travelling across the country. For the longest journeys, like Quito to Guayaquil (over 10 hours in bus), I recommend taking a TAME flight, which costs around US$45. TAME operates mostly Boeing 727 but they seem in good condition. In any case, nothing is more dangerous than taking the bus! Some drivers are complete lunatics! Our first trip from Quito to Ambato finished abruptly when the bus smashed into a jeep that was pulling out of a restaurant. No serious injuries but some pretty frightened passengers and a useless bus. These vehicles also have a tendency to break down at the most horrid places and times, like in the middle of nowhere between Alausi and Cuenca, surrounded by the mist just before a bend in the road! The driver (bless him) fixed the engine in two hours of highly folkloric work under the rain! Another good...

I always enjoyed taxi's. I felt relatively safe even being a young woman. The buses on the other hand, made me very nervous. City buses are fine, but when traveling to cities only a couple hours away, make sure you take motion sickness medicine and keep your eyes closed:-)

The best and cheapest way are the buses. They are a great adventure. Some frightening journeys are the route from Quito to Santo Domingo, and Banos to Puyo, but they are unforgetable and you see great stuff along the way.

Well, main international airoports are in Guayaquil (the asphalt strip appears suddenly when  you already think the airplane is going to land in the swamps) and in Quito. Taking off from Quito offers the opportunity to think seriously about the advantages of land transportation: the airplane goes lazily up and up in the rarefied air... and still the mountain tops are well above your head, and you cannot imagine where the exit door is!Air trasport is (after the recent turmoils, should I say "was"?) extremely cheap (the Army owns the main airline company AND the oil fields to refuill the tanks), Quito-Guayaquil is almost a lift service, taking you up and down in some 20 minutes, passing quickly from the cold Sierra climate to hot and humid atmosphere of the Coast.Travelling around the country must be by "busetas", small busses running eevywhere at any time. In any...

You can get to Ecuador by Plane or by land from Colombia. The roads of ecuador are very good specially because the landscape in which you drive is beautiful. Roads are very safe. Saeta the mayor airline of Ecuador cover by plane most of the mayor cities.

THE BUSES ARE GOOD BUT ONLY IF YOU PICK THE BUS YOU WANT. IT DEPENDS ON THE KIND OF COOPERATIVA YOU CHOOSE, IF YOU CHOOSE A POPULAR KIND YOU MAY TRAVEL WITH PEOPLE BUT ALSO WITH ANIMALS.IF YOU PICK A MEDIUM BUS YOU MAY SMELL BAD ODORS BUT IT´S FINE.THE MOST RECOMENDABLE TRANSPORT IS AIRPLANE OR RENT A CAR WITH A DRIVER BECAUSE THE TRANSIT SIGNS ARE NOT VERY CLEAR.

Flying is fastest, but buses are much, much more interesting. Buses are certainly the most common mode of transport in the country. There are train services, one of which, the Quito-Guayaquil line, is apparently one of the most spectacular in the world, dropping as it does from around 3,000 meters to sea level in just three or four hundred kilometers. There is also internal air service, mostly provided by TAME, which is a branch of the Ecuadorian Air Force. This was our first-class bus between Quito and Esmaraldas, which is on the Pacific Coast.

I love the bus rides. The buses are the cheapest and funnest way to travel. You meet cool people and see the coolest sites. This is the way to ride the bus. When traveling North always sit on the right side of the bus.(seated and facing the front of the bus) When traveling South sit on the left. When going East sit on the right and when going West sit on the left of the bus. This has been my formula for seeing the neatest stuff and best sites. Try to get a window seat whenever possible.

Ferrocarril El Nariz del Diablo is a very touristy but still nice train ride. You should sit on the roof while admiring the beutiful landscape going down the steep serpentine track.

The Buses

We found the buses a very cheap and easy way to get around Equador. The main problem was the warnings we got about being very careful around the bus stops. We were careful and had no problems
