Watch out of good looking tourists!!! Most of them are not ecuadorian!!!! :)Pickpockets and bagstealers are not as dangerous but can make you feel sad a little bit longer. To get a ride on any type of bus is such an adventure! Keep your insurance card at your closest-to-your-heart-pocket!! Don't eat anything on the streets if you want to live a bit of the city life outside your toilet! And enjoy repeating the same phrase more than once... Special spanish accent makes life a little bit.. let's say.. special! :)

Be careful of the downtown area, especially anywhere close to the nice hotels. Be aware of your surroundings when you leave. Often, criminals will watch the hotels and follow you by car or foot until they are able to rob you. This happened to us and 5 teenagers pulled guns on us. They actually got into the car we were in and stole anything they could get their hands on. They also searched us up and down for any type of jewelery, but we had been warned not to wear any. Otherwise, the people are beautiful and friendly.

by clmellin

buses and terminals are shady-especially on the coast and quito. dont drink anything offered to you, even right outside the club areas. if a transvestite(or a flock of them) are trying to get your attention-get the hell away. believe me on both of these tips.watch your stuff like a hawk. lots of smart, worldly traveler's get fooled and robbed. they use groups tactics, distractions like kids or old ladies, anything to swipe your stuff.

HEALTH ISSUESThere are no health requirements to enter the country.People with heart problems or high blood pressure should consult to their doctor about traveling to the highlands as well as to the tropical areas. It is recommended to take vitamin B-6 or B-12 before visiting the Coast or Rain Forest to avoid mosquito bites, and in turn avoid the risk of malaria.Hotels are not allowed to dispense mvitamin so please bring necessary medications with you. Trip insurance is highly recommended. We recommend it as standard procedure for you to take.Ask for advice from your local insurance company for coverage on this or any other trip.USEFUL MEDICAL ITEMS:High factor sunscreen, lip salve, insect repellent (with a high DEET concentration), mosquito coils, travel and sea sickness pills, Band-Aids, tweezers, scissors, condoms, contraceptives, antihistamine tablets, an epi-pen kit (for those with...

We did not feel threatened in...

by Tpenguingirl

We did not feel threatened in any way. We were in Atacames which is supposed to be very dangerous. We didn't see it at all. Just being aware of your surroundings, you should be all right. In old town Quito, alot of people, but also alot of police and military. Our guide told us it's because of the fighting in Columbia. They don't want any trouble in Quito. And again, no problems. Maybe it was just luck, but nowhere did we feel threatened. We did take the precaution of taking taxi's at night.

Border crossing: Ecuador/Peru

by lenoreva

If you are visiting the border between Ecuador and Peru, it is not worth it to try to get a stamp in your passport. I approached an official and he asked me for my yellow vaccination certificate. Of course I did not have it with me. So it was either give the guy a bribe, or go to jail. This was exactly one week before the border war broke out between the two countries, so good thing I chose the former! I never did get the stamp in my passport either. According to VT member Ibernedo, the situation between Peru and Ecuador is quite calm at the moment. That doesn't mean it'll be any prettier at the border though... unless they have done a lot of work since then. In January 1997, the 2 border towns were full of shacks, fly frequented food stands, skinny dogs, and autos on their 'last legs'. Maybe they've finally finished the road work on the Pan-American highway by now? We can only hope! For...

Ecuador is a poor country - this reality is simply unescapable when you visit. The average monthly income is barely US$165 per month! As a result, your bags, camera, watch and other items may represent an irresistible attraction to some local people. Beware of your camera in particular: I was offered a top of the range stolen camera in the bus terminal in Quito and had my own camera stolen in the bus from Otavalo to Quito! A mere two minutes of lack of attention and it was gone! There is no need to panic though, just exercise common sense and use normal precautions.

While being in quito be aware of it's high altitude wivh in the first days can cause a tough headache the first days your are there. The high amount of weichels (busses and cars) have a very low standard for enviroment wich cause a lot of smog and add to your headache

I got mugged on Washington street last year during the money crisis. Apparently I was walking in the most dangerous part of the city. The cops, security guards, and passers by just watched, and the cops were actually in on it.

I felt safe everywhere within Quito, and even more within Cuenca. And when I went in 'unsafe' place, people come to me to tell me !But I had a small problem with... MONEY! While I was able to use my ATM card everywhere in Peru ( using the 'System Plus' network ), it was impossible in Ecuador. So I tried the Western Union, which save me ! Ecuador now use american dollar. They do their own cents that have the same value in the country then american 25 cents or 10, etc.
