Ecuador is a beautiful country...

by Rasta_Rob

Ecuador is a beautiful country that is very easy to get around. It is not completely without its dangers, however. Visitors should avoid going anywhere near the Colombian border, especially in the province of Sucumbios, where a number of foreigners have been kidnapped (one of whom was recently murdered) in the past couple years. See the State Department's web site for more detailed info.

IF YOU SEE THIS MAN, GET ON YOUR KNEES AND THANK GOD!!! It's a must to travel around the country and see it's beauty. If you are with someone who speaks spanish and you want the BEST guiding service that money can buy, go see Edison Vaca. Tele: 369-792 or 394-616. He is a local that just gives tours. When we went to Mital de Monde, by bus, he was waiting there and offered us a tour of a village in the CRATER of the volcano Pululahua. And he also showed us some Inca ruins. He told us about things that you could never find in guide books like: The x in ecuadian wall hangings is the whole meaning of how the Incan's knew where the ecuator is, and showed us many local herbs to heal many things. We loved his tour so much we asked him for a day tour around north Ecuador. He picked us up at our hotel in Quito in a taxi that he hired for the day, I guess from a buddy, with his buddy as a driver....

The police at the check points. When taking the bus, I wasn't hassled, but when we drove from Quito to the coast, sometimes the police were difficult. If they see you're a gringo, they want cash. I was with my husband, who is Ecuadorian, and we didn't give in to them, and eventually they let us go, but not without a little hassle. Just cooperate with them, show your passport, and you should be fine.

Don't drink the tap water if you can avoid it. Be very careful with street food, but not so much so that you don't get to try local foods - try a lot! Just make sure the place looks clean. If you visit El Panecillo in Quito, take a taxi up. Be very careful with your money and camera in el Centro, the old town in Quito. If you are female, try never to be alone with a police officer.

pickpockets

The bus station in Quito is notorious. If there is a commotion watch your stuff even if people are swirling about your feet.

Passport

by bartlese

If you are caught without your passport, it is an automatic 3 days in jail (not nice). It doesnt matter if you have a copy of your passport and visa, you must have the real thing on you.

Before approaching the volcanos for sightseeing or climbing, try to get information from reliable sources in order to know the current colcanic activity.Same warning before going to Banos.

Waves

When you're in the Pacific coast, no problem of altitude! But mind the waves, they can be dangerous.

Altitude

by CaptainAmerica

Do not forget, when arriving in Quito, that the altitude is very very high. You need to get used to it a little bit before commiting any excess (drinking too much alcohol, smoking, running...)
