nly just over 2500 inhabitants life on the island - and they have their own currency - The Falkland Pound- notes and coins are issued for the islands. Though the normal Pound Sterling is accepted everywhere. Be aware if you take the Falkland Pound out of the country, since you may not be able to exchange it back, even in England!

For reliable information if you are staying in the Falklands the Penguin News is indispensable. Not only does it keep you up to date with what's happening locally, where that "two nighter" is being held, what CDs/DVDs have arrived at the West Store but it is also a good "yellow pages" for local contacts, where to stay, local tour operators etc. It also has the TV and radio listings. Published every Friday it is essential reading for all Falkland Islanders and visitors alike. To read archived articles from Penguin News or to subscribe to the publication go to http://www.penguin-news.com

Just beyond the Wickham Heights lies the Onion Range, a firing range which is run by the military. I managed to get myself on a helicopter trip out there to watch a live firing exercise by the army. After the exercise the guests were invited to have a go with the various weapons used, so not wanting to be the only person not to have a go I chose to try out the Browning .50 cal heavy machine gun. Ouch! It was loud and it shook the ground .. having done it I must say that I have no desire to do it again, it was just one of those things you do .. just to say you've done it .. a bit like bungee jumping I suppose (not that you would ever get me to do that!) I have obscured the faces of the people in the other photo as they are all serving personnel in the military .. can't be too careful!

Sea Lion Island - February 2004, getting up before the sun rose to walk to the beach to watch whales. i had to walk through a colony of Gentoo penguins to reach the beach. This photo was taken at around 5:15am

Visit the information office located at the end of the pier where tender boats from cruise ships arrive. They have some maps of Stanley showing where you can find the restaurants, shopping, etc. They also have information there about accommodations on outer islands, wildlife, etc. One great thing is that they sell postcards already tsamped and ready to go, you just have to write them. Keep in mind all postcards that you send from here will first go to Britain before going on to their destination...

A visit to the Capital, Port Stanley, is well worth the effort, just to see what life is like on the other side of the world from Europe. You will be amazed at what people build their houses from. I particularly like the unspoiled landscapes, the desolation of the terrain and the wildlife that you can come accross.I will miss the penguins that come up to you for food, they are almost as friendly as the natives.

The Globe hotel in Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. The place is very small especially when about 60 thirsty crew members all walk in at once, two hours later we all had to leave as the bar had completely run out of booze and the next delivery was in six weeks!!

If you are into knitting or want knitted products goto the Wool Store..it's across from the globe bar. The have yarn for sale here. I think I paid 15 pounds for enough yarn for a very large sweater, and the people are very nice here (like they are in the rest of the town).

Pix only for now.Text will be added in the future.
