Pubs on the Island: Fish & Chips

by SabrinaSummerville

Many visitors to the Falkland Islands long to eat fish and chips, it seems. This is part of the very Britishness of these islands. As a result all the pubs along the portfront serve these, especially when there's a cruise ship in town.I didn't indulge, as we get enough of these at home in ireland, but friends of ours did and pronounced the food just great - but advised the inn keeper that they were missing the mushy peas.

The World Cafe is actually one of many places

World Cafe is actually one of the few restaurants...but it had a nice atmosphere and good fish and chips. It seems all the tourists like me eat Fish and chips while in the Falklands, while I have the feeling that local eat something else. Though the Faklands are very British, your Spanish might come in handy during the summer season because many young Chileans come over for the summer to help out on so-called 'tourist days'--those are the days when cruise ships come in. Most cruise ships arriving have the same number of people on the ship as there are people living in the Falklands--so the restaurants get quiite busy on these days.

While I was there, restaurants were few and far between, but the Hotel in Stanley does a hearty breakfast and was well worth the cost. The unique atmosphere that goes with a location that is very much a frontiers town sits well against the views of the harbour.

This is the inside of the supermarket across from the Caystan Gift Shop. There is a large assortment of wine and liquor here. A bottle of Falklan Island wine was only $5 us and a bottle of Falkland Island Whiskey was $27(ouch).

Deno's is very good, but after we ate there some people told us The Globe was much better, the inside was nicer than Deno's and the place was packed when we went by.

When we were there time did not permit seeking a restaurant though we understand that there is a good one at the hotel which may be mentioned in the link provided to the tourist board.
