Wildlife?

by Sharrie

The Falklands are well known for its abundance of wildlife... here, it's the home to vast colonies of seabirds (most famous of which is the world's largest black-browed albatross), penguins, dolphins & seals.Cobb's wren, Peale's dolphins & Johnny Rook are some examples.

by wadekorzan

The Anglican Cathedral in the center of Stanley. This is the oldest cathedral, over 100 years old, and supposedly the southernmost cathedral in the world. The Whalebone Arch was a gift from the South Georgia Islands in honor of 150 years of British rule in the Falklands.

Another site to see is the cathedral. (Yes, Stanley does have one). It is an engineering feat when you take into consideration what materials are available on the island.Make note of the tin roof and the whale bone arch at the front. A sign of what used to be.

Whatever you do, get around the islands as much as you can. Now that the airport is open it is tempting just to stay near the area and just visit Stanley.I suggest you be more adventurous and arrange to travel further afield. There is much more to see than just the west island. The Islands group has a diversity of landscapes, a wide variety of wildlife (apart from sheep) and is full of unusual plant life. But I defy you to find many trees!

Before you visit the Falklands, you have to find it. It is actually made up of more than two hundred smaller islands sprinkled about two larger islands connected with a bridge. Coming into Port Stanley is picturesque, a bit of English charm. It is painfully small, the entire population of the entire Island is under 3,000 people, they enjoy full employment here but the taxidriver's were the first we encountered who could care less whether you hired them or not.

Not exactly the kind of place to bring a surfboard, this rugged coastline is home to seals, sea lions, elephant seals and a variety of penguins.Despite the conditions, windsurfing is supposed to be an activity enjoyed by advocates of that sport.

by pjallittle

As is the case with many Island territories, there is often far more water than land. This area is reflected on this map which has been sized to expand across your entire screen.Active efforts are being made to find Oil here and the government has established an attractive low cost leasing program to attract exploration.
