I came by a cruise
by globetrott
I came to Devils island on various cruises onboard of M/S Vistafjord and Sagafjord between 1979 and 1985, so that was many years ago. A thing that has not changed since then is the fact that this tiny island will not have a real port, so all passangers have to be taken ashore by tenderboats. You will hardly find lots of ships that have this tiny island on its itinerary, simply because most modern ships have too many people onboard and that fact would put a lot of stress into the island. All you can do ashore is take a walk of maybe 1 hour and you have seen everything that is worth seeing. There was a restaurant and a small hotel but nothing else on the island in 1985.

Hiring a car at Saint-Laurent
by theo1006
We had intended to hire a car at Hertz's, but they were closed. So a friendly Guianese drove us into town to ADA. Here we got a Peugeot 206 for 4 days at EUR 48 per day, 1000 km free. They were quite helpful, on our return they brought us with our luggage to the river bank. ADA address: 14 Rue Hector Riviérez (close to the harbour) Email: adasaintlaurent@hotmail.com
To French Guiana from Paramaribo
by theo1006
From Paramaribo we made a trip into French Guiana in the following way: (1) By taxi from Paramaribo to Albina.(2) Crossing Marowijne River to Saint-Laurent du Maroni.(3) Hiring a car at St.Laurent.We found that you cannot take a rented car from Suriname into French Guiana, the insurance is not valid.Taxi's to Albina leave from Waterkant between Heiligenweg and Jodenbreestraat, starting at 6 am. You may just walk up there and hop in, or order them to pick you up at your hotel at a future date. (In that case take their HP number, they are not too punctual!). The fare is SRD 30, but at that rate they will only depart when full. If you are in a hurry, you have to pay for the empty places. Travel time to Albina is 2 hours. The taxi will take you to the river bank, where small boats leave, or to the jetty of the car ferry. At the car ferry (see photo's with fare and schedule) you have to pass...
