Kwitaro River by bianchis The Kwitaro River drains the area between the Rupununi River and the Rewa River, is one of the major watercourses of the Southern Rupununi District. The Kwitaro is remote from civilization. Its 120 mile course has but a single family living on it and is unmarked by road. Access overland by Land Rover to Shea Village and by jungle footpath to the east for 30 miles to Brian's Landing. These are their tribal lands for the Wapashani amerindians . It is exceptionally rich in natural wonders . Leave a Comment

Iwokrama Canopy Walkway by DSwede Located about 750m walk behind the Atta Lodge / Rainforest Camp (which in itself is about 1km from the main road). The Canopy Walkway has 5 suspension bridges, and 4 suspended platforms high in the trees. The second platform is 27m off the ground and the third is the highest at 30m. The third platform has a few chairs that bird and nature enthusiasts can sit on and patiently wait for the elusive spotting they came here for. The trail itself is free, but if you wish to have a guide, the base rate is 4500 GYD. You may be able to negotiate this lower (if you look desperate like I did), or if you stay at the Atta Lodge, will be inclusive in your rate. There are a few other trails to choose from in the area, but offer views only from the jungle floor. This tip should be used in conjunction with my other off-the-beaten-path tip for the Atta Rainforest Camp. This lodge is on the south end of the Iwokrama park. It is ~8 hours by overland from Georgetown, or about 1.5 hours north of Annai and the Rockview Lodge airstrip.

Please note that this tip should be used in conjunction with my other off-the-beaten-path tip for the Iwokrama Canopy walkway. Atta Lodge / Rainforest Camp @ Iwokrama Canopy Walk: Located a few kilometers north of the Iwokrama Reserve's south gate. Accommodations are hammocks with mosquito nets. Showers and lounge areas are quite nice and comfortable. It is built as a leisure stay for more affluent, comfort seeking travelers and particularly anyone who is a bird watcher. If you book on-line or through an agency, rates are ~$100 US, but includes accommodation, all meals, and guides for the nature and canopy walks. They will assist with transportation transfers from Rock View Lodge (airstrip), or Iwokrama Field Station (north gate). If you just "arrive" like I did with no booking, and can fit the appearance of a true budget traveler, be polite and speak to the staff discretely as they may be willing to give you a discount. We settled on $30 US for myself for the whole package. To get here, either book a pre-arranged ride through an agency. Or, if coming from the Georgetown, Intraserv and minibuses will drop you off about 8am. If coming from Lethem/Annai, you will be dropped off about 5am. You need to have arranged rides for your departing onward journey, so recommend booking those in advance!

by Bgem Visit the Ranches of the Rupununi, working ranches that have opened their doors to visitors. Cattle are still worked the age old way from horseback and cowboys ride barefoot in the stirrup. Situated in both the north and south Rupununi, each ranch offers an unusual experience. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''' It is here that many endangered species survive - Black caiman, Arapaima fish, Harpy eagle, Giant river otter. Visits to more remote Amerindian villages, rock paintings, and the Kanuku Mountain range know for it multitude of wildlife, begin from these ranches. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Much of the service is personalised, tours and adventures from the ranches being run by the owners themselves. Here, the chance to meet the intrepid pioneers of adventure in Guyana is an experience to be remembered. Trips from the ranches either by open back 4x4 vehicle, motor powered canoes, horse-back riding or trekking are exciting and stimulating. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''' The Rupununi ranches are namely Karanambu Ranch, Dadanawa Ranch and Rock View Lodge. Attached photo shows a baby on a Victoria Amazionica Regia Lily at the Karanambu Ranch. Leave a Comment

Anyone got a bucket? by K1W1 Myself and Canguru took a boat trip (USD 80.00) up the Mazaroni river to Kurupung, a diamond and gold mining village in the interior. We rented a canoe and paddled further up river to the falls. The trip took about a week and we camped in the jungle or with the friendly miners - a great experience. By travelling by canoe we were silent and had the opportunity to see the wildlife in its undisturbed natural habitat. Kurupung is very basic and everything is a lot more expensive as it has to be brought in by boat. Go prepared. Also worth a visit is Bartica, an island just south of the capital. After spending our first night in the bush, we realised it wasn't a good idea to leave the canoe on the water during the night! Leave a Comment

The Sea Wall on a Sunday Night in Georgetown. As the sun sets locals head here for a beer and to people watch. There is a carnival like atmosphere with rides for kids and hot dogs. It's a shame people leave behind so much garbage after they are done hanging out. Leave a Comment
