Things to Do

Jasper

Jasper, Orinduik

grets Says:  Although jasper comes in many colours, including yellow, green and greyish blue, here at Orinduik, the rocks are red. Jasper is a semi-precious stone which is popular with gem cutters. It is an opaque variety of Chalcedony, a mineral from the quarts family which varies from...

The view from the air

The view from the air, Orinduik

grets Says:  The view of the rainforest from the aircraft as we left Orinduik really captivated me. I could sit and look down on the trees forever! It seems you don't know how many shades of green are around until you've seen a rainforest from the air!

The falls

The falls, Orinduik

grets Says:  The falls are not high, but the setting in the fact that they tumble over a semi-precious stone, make them very attractive. From the airstrip there is a short walk down to the falls, over some rocks. The falls are named after orin, a kind of sea weed which covers the rocks...

Swimming

Swimming, Orinduik

grets Says:  There are also small pools at the bottom of the falls, which are deep enough for you to get in and swim. The water is really quite pleasantly warm.

Bathing

Bathing, Orinduik

grets Says:  The falls are ideally suited to swimming and bathing under the spray. It is incredibly refreshing on a hot day to sit under the falls and let yourslef be massaged by mother nature!

As far as I know, there are no scheduled flights to Orinduik. We chartered a couple of planes as a group, and flew to Kaieteur first, then on to Orinduik. The flight from Shanklands was about one hour to Kaieteur and a further hour to Orinduik.

Warnings and Dangers

Slippery surface

Slippery surface, Orinduik

grets Says:  Getting to the base of the falls for the bathing and swimming, you need to do a little "fording". Walk very carefully, as the rocks are coverd by a green sea-weed which is very slippery indeed!

Pollution

Pollution, Orinduik

grets Says:  Despite being a beautifully natural setting, and way, way off the beaten track, there was still pollution in the water here at Orinduik, which I thought was very sad.

Luggage and bags: All you need is a small bag to fit the stuff you need for the day.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Good shoes for walking down to the falls, as there are some rocks to clamber over. Light clothing only needed.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Don't forget the deodorant - I did!

Photo Equipment: Some sort of waterproof protection is a very good idea, especially if you want to take the camera right up to the falls.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Bring your swim suit and a towel. There are no changing facilities, so I found a saraong very useful for changing under.

Smoke rings

Smoke rings, Orinduik

grets Says:  Another amusing sight at Mahdia, was the lorry delivering fuel. He was sitting in his cab with the engine idling, and his exhaust was blowing smoke rings! I've never seen that before! The funny thing was, the staff here couldn't understand why we were all taking pictures of...

Mahdia

Mahdia, Orinduik

grets Says:  From Orinduik we flew to a small landing strip in a place called Mahdia. The sole purpose of our visit here was to refuel the plane. We were absolutely amazed at how it was done - the pilot climbed up on the wing, and the ground staff handed him buckets with aviation fuel...
