A historic lighthouse, just when it was built, I cannot tell you. It is difficult to take a picture of this kind of structure as there are no good vantage points. Suppose we could have gotten one off the ship but simply did not remember.
We were also on early dinner seating. Rush, rush.

For Georgetwon, this is THE STAEBROOK MARKET the kind of place which has everything and is the place to go.
This market provides a good deal of entertainment and is a study in people watching. The variety of goods is staggering, a real experience.
It is a shame that we were having to rush from spot to spot, one loses something in having to do so.

There are a few historical sights to see in and around Georgetown including the beautiful old wooden church. It is reputed to be the tallest wooden building in he World.
The interior is remarkable, the next picture will show why.

Georgetown Main Street. Don't look too closely, street maintenance does not seem to be very high on their priority lists. In fact, there is very little in the way of paved roads in Guyana.
This is typical of small countries that gain independence, once they have it, they really don't seem to follow the standards formerly in place. Steadily, a slow and sometimes not so gradual decay begins to take place.
But who am I to take shots, we see this happening in the good old USA big time. Our urban decay is accelerating at an alarming pace.

Kevin and I enjoyed the zoo, lots of animals to check out. Just be careful on the monkeys and use your common sense as it's possible to be too close to some of the cages.

On a lighter note, here's the real deal, a cart drawn by donkeys or mules. Not uncommon in these parts. Though not effected by increased fuel costs, they sure do leave a lot behind...........

Postcard showing an aerial view of Georgetown Streets, it does not do it justice, but the best overhead shot available.
Stunningly beautiful workmanship. St. George's is a Catholic Cathedral. I have several more pictures of stained glass, chandeliers and other features but we have other places to see.

The organ pipes are, as you can see, very unusually crafted and quite beautiful. We did not get a chance to hear what they sound like but they are reputed to be very rich in tone.
