Taxis in the city

Taxis are quite common in the city and safe too. In popular areas, there are taxi stands which should have a few waiting at all hours of the day.

However, if you are having trouble finding one, are not near an established taxi stand or simply want the convenience of door-to-door service, the taxis in Asuncion are radio dispatched quickly.

If you call them (number below), give your address and a call-back phone if they ask for it, they will tell you ~20 minutes, but in reality will be 5~10 minutes. There is no additional fee for radio dispatch. It should be noted that the taxi dispatcher will 99% likely not speak anything other than Spanish.

Silvio Pettirossi Airport Asuncion

Going to Asuncion by airplane still is an adventure.
Most air traffic control is still by radio only; a new Spanish Air Traffic control radar will be installed in 2011.
Many of the big farm owners have their own landing strips and do their own thing in the air.
The North of the country is known for smuggling flights, while in the South an ever continuing air space battle with Argentina continues.

Flying in the rainy season is dangerous and the runway only build up more rubber and is very slippery when wet.

The Airport building is from the early eighties and through the years converted back to the Paraguayan style of management.

The Airport was renamed into Silvio Pettirossi (the first Paraguayan aviator) after former President Stroessner was expelled from the country.

It's all no big deal with three international flights a day; it's the ideal people watching spot.

Bus Terminal

Very old Paraguayan tram

Asuncion's bus terminal is about 4km south-east of the centre in the seemingly endless suburbs. A number of local buses connect it to the centre, just ask the people at the information desk in the terminal which ones to take. It costs 2000 Guarani (about 40 cents) for a ticket to the centre and the trip takes about 20 minutes (to reach Independence Square or close by).

There are plenty of places to buy food in the terminal as well as numerous souvenir shops and ticket offices for all the bus companies. Buses leave from Asuncion to all parts of the country, as well as to international destination such as Santa Cruz in Bolivia or Resistencia in Argentina.

Leito in Paraguay

For the price of USD16, and no hassle of changing busses on the way, Rysa mesmerized me with its Foz de iguassu - Asuncion trip. Best in terms of scheduling compared to the night arrivals of the other companies and help with cross-border formalities made this bus company a favorite.
