Leather Goods in Asuncion by eduar68 Somewhat close to the port area, lies the Recova neighborhood where a multitude of leather goods and other crafts can be found at incredible prices. Most of them are rough and picturesque in nature. I personally love them. Finer stores carry more traditional fine leather and the prices are also very convenient

After 2 months in Asuncion, I have found only 2 places to find books in english. The bookstores in 2 of the larger malls, Shopping Del Sol and Mariscal Lopez, carry some selction of english titles. Expect to pay more than the north american price (around 100,000 guaranis-$20 US for a paperback). My best advice: if you are a reader, and prefer to read in english, make sure you bring books with you! Leave a Comment Theme: Books

charm filigree by capelo “Filigrana” is an antique art form with a delicate handcrafted technique that was introduced into Latin America by the Spanish conquistadors. Filigrana can be traced to the Ancient Civilizations of Egypt, China and India; places where this fine technique was used in silver to adorn precious jewels and royal gifts. In the Middle Ages, the Saxons, the Bretons and Celts in Ireland applied this secret skill in the elaboration of their most sophisticated jewellery. It was the Moors who brought this art form to Spain and, consequently, reached Latin America with the Spanish immigrants that settled in the colonies. Several South American countries acquired the skills in creating Filigrana. But today, Paraguay is the only country that continues with the tradition of producing silver pieces of sophisticated workmanship. The descendants of European conquistadors are the skillful craftmen in Filigrana art making and today, from Paraguay, they want to show the world their special ability to create these delicate artisan jewells. This artisan technique involves a delicate procedure of doubling and twisting fine threads of 925 sterling silver into ornate and elaborate designs. This technique can also be utilized with fine silver or gold threads of 10, 14 or 18 K. and the pieces can be adorned with precious and semiprecious stones to create a different look. When observing the finished products, these Filigrana pieces resemble fine Victorian lace designs. These lace-like pieces of fine silver threads are then soldered together by an artisan solder to create a finished product. Each piece is exclusive and unique, and its creation can involve 9 hours of work for a simple piece and about 35 hours for a more intricate and complex design.

A local NGO that promotes design and new products around the Ypakarai Lake. They work with artisans from different towns around the lake. Check the website for options like ceramics, pottery, jewellery, fabrics, etc.
Look specially for wooden figures of Paraguayan's mythological creatures: pombero, mboi tuy (a parrot head's snake), jasy jatere (a blonde dwarf that kidnaps wandering children), luison (wolf man) and more.
