Nice ambience with English menu and speaking staff.

I must say I had the best Lomo Saltado of the trip here. This is a classic Peruvian meal of strips of beef sauted with onions and garnished heavily with cilantro and tomotoes. This version had the best beef I had in all of Peru and though pricey, it was tasty. My only gripe was the portion was not too big and this local specialty is generally served in enormous quanities.

Carillon Chico: true local fare, true local place
  • Tip Rating:
  • It doesn't look like much from the front and even the interior lacks much atmosphere with its neon lights buzzing ahead. But make no mistake, this a classic Peruvian eatery. The dishes are tasty and cheap, and ooze local flavor and the owner chef is friendly as he tries to help you through the Spanish only menu.

I never knew what I was eating but it was all good!

Great locals restaurant with good cheap beer and a bustling atmosphere around lunch time. Waiters keep the food and beer coming and it is all to easy to spend an entire afternoon there!

Cerviche is the national dish of Peru. It consists of raw fish or shell fish that is marinated in lime juice which more or less "cooks" it with it's natural acid. It is garnished heavily with cilantro and absolutely out of this world. Before the meal, you get a bowl of cancha, which is a roasted corn that goes perfectly with the Crystal beer on offer.

  • Directions: Just up from the Plaza de Armas on M Caceres. There are two on opposite corners and sure both are good, but loved this place for atmosphere.

You can find these women serving up fresh squeezed orange juice on every street corner in Huaraz. You can stil on small stools and watch as they cut the oranges in half and pump the juice from the fruit with one swift arm motion.

The juice is fantastic and cheap too. We were astonished the first time when we were told it was about 30 cents for a glass, and when we got a refill, we assumed it would be 60. We were even more amazed that the second glass was free!

Medileny Chicken: bet you can't eat just one....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Roast chicken is ubiquitous in Peru and is uniformly excellent but this fast food operation serves up some of the tastiest and biggest portions of the succulent bird.

We had a "family platter," which even though only one chicken was, in fact, enough to feed a whole family!

Though I don't routinely eat Italian out as I am of Italian descent, this was a great little place to reward yourself after a long trek. The pizza was among the best I have had in South America and it was a place for a romantic dinner.

A medium pizza with ham and chorizo, enough to fill one person well was about $7, but worth the splurge.

    Hostal Raymondi: Jamon anyone
  • Tip Rating:
  • Small hostal eatery with decently priced breakfasts and somewhat expensive though delicious fruit shakes.

The local jamon (ham) is well worth a try.

    Ice cream in Carhuaz
  • Satisfaction:
  • Carhuaz is known for its ice cream, so we made a stop here to try some for ourselves. The ice cream was indeed delicious, but a little too early in the morning to thoroughly enjoy it. The most distinctive feature of this region's ice creams is the flavor selection: you can or rum or beer flavored ice cream. I opted for the rum.

    Andean restaurants in general
Guinea pig is a local favorite - cuy in Spanish in case you're not sure what it is on the menu. Be careful if you don't like to meet what you eat, because where Luis ordered this, it came with the head still attached. You can order a quarter, half, or the whole animal. Not for me (they're pets in the States), but apparently it's tasty.

This picture was taken from the porch of the restaurant where we ate. There were two deer in the grassy area, and this one was taking a break under the shelter.
