Things to Do

La Calera Hot Springs.

La Calera Hot Springs., Chivay

euzkadi Says:  These hot springs are located four kms from Chivay, two big swiming pools with showers, and a small cafeteria. I was surprised to find different swiming pools (and prices) for peruvians and tourists.

Visit La Calera Hot Springs

Visit La Calera Hot Springs, Chivay

bsfreeloader Says:  The La Calera hot springs are a great place to unwind after some trekking or taking the long, winding road from Arequipa to Chivay. Just 5 kilometers east of town, the hot springs are a short walk or a quick ride away.

Walk to the hot springs

Walk to the hot springs, Chivay

gonzo747 Says:  You can take a bus or a taxi from Chivay to the "la calera" hot springs, but a more rewarding and cheaper way to do it is to walk there. It's about 3kms and a great way to get used to the altitude. You walk next to the colca river and there are some nice views on the way....

El Nido del Condor

El Nido del Condor, Chivay

Luiz Says:  Chivay is a small city at the Colca Valley, and a overnight stop from Arequipa, to visit the Colca Canyon and the Condor's watch point.Wake up early, and you'll have this great view.

Chivay market

Chivay market, Chivay

gt4715b Says:  This is a nice, relaxed market where you can feel free to browse without all the movement of the markets at Pisac or Chincheros in the Sacred Valley, for example. Here the prices are generally better than can be found in Arequipa, although my sense of it is that you won't...

Chivay Hot Springs

Chivay Hot Springs, Chivay

gt4715b Says:  These hot springs about 3 km outside of Chivay are a treat after a long hike, or anytime. When I was there, there were two pools open, an indoor pool and a larger outdoor pool. Both pools offer water temperatures of around 38ºC or 98ºF. If you go when there is a chill in the...

Hotels

Casa Andina.

Casa Andina., Chivay

euzkadi Says:  I slept here during my visit to the Colca Canyon, it was included in my three days tour. A very good hotel, with a friendly staff, and a nice restaurant. Very close to the main square.

Colca Inn: Good value;

Colca Inn: Good value;, Chivay

gt4715b Says:  I stayed here during my tour to the Colca Valley. The place was clean, with private bath with reliable hot water. They supply soap and towels. They offer a free contentental breakfast and there is a TV room and pool table on the lobby level. I can't give details as to price,...

I saw some restaurants in Chivay, but the dinner in this nice restaurant was included in my tour. It was a great buffet dinner of peruvian food, also some dances for tourists.

Nightlife

mc elroy: Irish pub with some altitude

mc elroy: Irish pub with some altitude, Chivay

gonzo747 Says:  Mc Elroy is an Irish pub in Chivay. As any irish pub it's not the cheapest place to drink but very cozy. There is a pool table. Beware of drinking on this altitude it might hit you a bit faster then normal, it's worth trying though.

McElroy's Irish Pub: Irish bar in Chivay

McElroy's Irish Pub: Irish bar in Chivay, Chivay

gt4715b Says:  Yeah, that's right. There's an Irish bar in Chivay, Peru. This small place is a fine place to grab a beer, if you're up for drinking at this altitude. This place with a pool table for free use and a small TV was quiet on the Wednesday night I was there. There is a happy hour...

Clothes for the cold!

When in Chivay, which you might have to spend a night in if you're travelling to see the Colca canyon, you might want to get some extra clothes/hats/gloves. Not only does it get freezing at night but you can also pick things up for good prices.

What to buy: Clothes, hats, gloves etc..

What to pay: Less than city prices

Warnings and Dangers

Altitude Affects Alcohol Effects

Being located at a height of about 3700 meters, the altitude here can alter the effects of alcohol, making it more potent. Be careful and don't drink to excess if you drink at all. This isn't the place to prove your alcohol tolerance.

Luggage and bags: I visited Chivay during the easter holidays, and it was very cold at night (we had an electric heather in our room), so bring warm clothes even when is not winter time.
