Traditional costume
  • Tip Rating:
  • This woman in Chivay is wearing the typical costume of the region. She may look quite well-built but that’s due to the fact that she’s wearing several skirts at once. This is a sign of her family’s wealth. It shows that her husband is able to buy her a skirt every year, as tradition demands. In return she will knit him an annual poncho.

    mate de coca
  • Tip Rating:
  • beacause the altitude comes above the 5000m in the Colca, you have to drink mate de coca leaves.
The picture is a prepared tea, but normally you get the leaves in boiled water, with a bit of sugar, and it helps against the altitude sickness.
MATE COCA is a medicinal tea made from the leaves of the Coca plant (Erythroxylon). This tea has been used for over four thousand years by the people of South America. Coca was and is still considered a sacred aspect of the Andean culture.

    Coramina Glucosa tablet
  • Tip Rating:
  • for altitude sickness.
The main tourist, historical and ecological sites are found at over 3,000 metres above sea level (Cajamarca, Huaraz, Huancayo, Cuzco and Puno), therefore it is advisable to take Coramina Glucosa (Glucose) or Micoren, drugs which will help prevent altitude sickness or "soroche".

    Apachetas
The "apachetas" are mounds of stones , as an altar , and they are made in the honor of the PACHA MAMA
The Indians live their presents in front the apacheta and the prey in order that the misfortunes(chiknis) disappear of their way and to get health to follow the travel

    Coyaguas y Cabanas
The Colaguas of Aymara origin were cosidered as warriors , sons of the Callahuanta volcanoe and they where recognized in the old days by the elongated shape of their heads , that they got deformating the childrens heads as they were born to keep the shape of the volcanoe were they come.
The Cabanas of quechua origin came from the depths of the snowshapped Hualca Hualca and they also did the new born head deformation to get them flat remembering the flat shape of their volcanoe
Nowadays , they do not make any head deformation and they are distiguished by the women hats as the Collaguas use them of white straw and with an embroidered ribbon and flowers on the sides;two flowers for those not married , one for the married and one black for the widows. The Cabanas usea wool hat completly embroidered with local animals and flowers, one star and the moon
