High heels and streets of Cuzco don't mix well...

I made the mistake to bring my city shoes (1.5 inch heel) with me as only shoes other than my hiking boots. I regretted it. The streets are made of bumpy stones in the touristy area so you have to watch yourself every time you cross them. Then the sidewalks can be narrow and sometimes there are steps when you expect it the least. Make yourself a favor and leave your stylettos at home! By the way, the stone shown on the picture is really slippery, be careful!

    Must bring
  • Tip Rating:
  • With the high altitude, expect cold temperatures in the mornings.

But with the high altitude and closeness to the equator, sunscreen is also a must. It's amazing how quickly you begin to burn when the sun comes up.

    Sunscreen and Baseball Cap
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is easy to get sunburned on a sunny day on a hike in the Sacred Valley, so a good idea is to bring a baseball cap and sunscreen for prevention and comfort.

What I took for the Inca Trail Hike
  • Tip Rating:
  • The hiking bag I had was a bit too big for the long, steep haul, so I ended up borrowing something smaller from the travel agency. Basically, get the smallest day pack you can find and take only what you can in there.

2 t-shirts, 1 sweatshirt, 1 poncho, 1 pants, 1 shorts, 4 pairs of socks (one for each day), 4 pairs of undies (one for each day), ball cap

A roll of TP, travel size toothbrush, toothbrush, and soap, and a shampoo/conditioner sample. The travel agency provided us with soaps to wash our hands with at each meal so you only need enough to wash up with on the last day (if you want).

I just took a regular camera with zoom lens built in. Took lots of great pix but you'll want to share these with everyone so a digital camera is probably best.

    sunscreen/sunblock;
you can buy a hiking stick in the towns you will stop in just before the hike - it would have made a good souvenir but someone took my stick in machu picchu (we had to leave it at the gate) :(
all other gear was provided by the tour agency

Immodium AD - fortunately I didn't need it but you never know....

    Bring comfortable and warm clothes!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Good comfortable walking shoes to stroll the steep Cusco streets.

Some warm clothes to fight the cool nights due to Cusco's altitude and the regular cold fronts.

    rain gear and long sleeves
Rain is common in Cuzco from November until April so bring gortex. The temperatures are cool almost all the time in Cuzco so remember to take heavier clothing than usual for 8* South.

    Packing for the Inca Trail
Good backpack with waist strap for the hike.

Bring a fleece, hat and mittens on the Inca Trail because it gets very cold at night.

Bring enough toilet paper, you won't find any on the trail.

Lots of memory and batteries because you won't want to run out of either on the last day when you get to Machu Picchu.

Snacks to eat on the trail. You might get hungry during the day.
