White Christ, Cusco
On a hill only a 10-minute walk from Saqsaywaman and overlooking the city of Cusco is the statue known as the "White Christ" or "Cristo Blanco." The towering statue of Christ greatly resembles the "Christ the Redeemer" statue atop the Corcavado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
However, the impetus for Christo Blanco statue is a far different and interesting story. The Cristo Blanco statue was actually a gift. The statue was erected by a group of Christian Palestinians who were seeking refuge in Cusco in 1945. Cristo Blanco represents a symbol of their gratitude to Cusco for accepting them and the statue was a parting gift when they finally returned to their home country. Cusqueños believe the statue serves as a reminder "that good deeds do not go unnoticed." As kind as I found Peruvians to be on my first trip to Peru, I believe this too!
The statue is lit at night which I understand is an incredible sight and makes for some excellent photos. If you do not have individual transportation, taxis may be the best way to get there at night. We were not able to get very close to this statue due to time restraints, but I would have liked very much to have seen it at night.
As you can see from one of the photos here, the Tranvia de Cusco tram/trolley also goes to Cristo Blanco on a regularly scheduled basis during the day. Read more about the Tranvía de Cusco tram/trolley here.
If you visit Saqsayhuaman you can’t miss noticing the more than 6 metres high statue of Christ. It was given to the city of Cusco by Palestinians, who were living in Cusco during World War II.
We didn’t walk all the way up to the statue (I guess not that much to see), but stopped at a view point along the road and enjoyed the beautiful view of Cusco...
A large statue of Jesus Christ - The White Christ - stands guard over the city of Cusco. It was a gift from colonial Palestine.
It is located on the road to Sacsayhuaman near Q'enqo and can be seen from Sacsayhuaman. It is ironic that many of the stones from this site were used to build Chirstian Cusco
The White Christ, on a hill above Cusco, was a gift from Christian Palestinians in 1945. They were in Cusco as refugees, and donated the statue before they went home.
The location also gives a good view of Cusco from above the city.
Almost every Latin American City with a hill nearby has a statue similar to this. The most famous is Rio's Cristo Redento. I always thought it was unique but so far Rio, Santiago, Lima and Cusco all have either statues of Christ , the Virgin Mary or Crosses overlooking their cities.
This statue of Christ it is situated at the top of a hill nearby Cusco; from there, the sights of the city are awesome. By night it is enlightened, so it can be seen it from the city.
Esta estatua de Cristo está situada en la cima de una colina próxima a Cusco; desde allí, las vistas son espectaculares. Por la noche se encuentra iluminado, por lo que se lo puede ver desde la ciudad.
