Plaza Mayor And Surroundings: Wooden balconies
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many wonderful wooden balconies in the centre of Lima. The most impressive are in the Plaza de Armas, but if you wander around you will see many others, not so well preserved, but beautiful too. Covering the balconies with wooden bars let the people living in the house gaze the people passing by in the streets without being seen from the outside...

District Of Barranco: Art Deco in Barranco
  • Tip Rating:
  • I booked a hostel in the southern district of Barranco, so had some time to wander around this beautiful quarter. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it soon became favourite place for painters and other artists. You can find here delicious examples of art deco architecture, as this public library (Biblioteca) in the Municipal Park.

Plaza Mayor And Surroundings: The rain in Lima is called Garúa or llovizna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well, it was one of those rainy days ... (in fact, it is not *rain*, it is garúa or llovizna which means that the relative humidity is 100 por cent, and when the temperature falls the air cannot hold the water, which then falls out in a form similar to rain) ... I mean, to you it will make no differens if it is rain or lluvizna, as long as you get wet. This garúa is most frequent during the winter period (in June-July-August), when the weather in Lima not is at its best.

District Of Miraflores: The Peru is a mecca for plastic surgery

    plastic surgery?

While wandering around a market, I stopped to listen in to a shopkeepers TV where I learned that Peru is the number one destination for Americans going overseas for plastic surgery. Apparently, plastic surgery is big among Lima's upper classes. The surgeons are considere very adept and cheap by U.S. standards, so Americans are flocking to Lima for tummy tucks, breast implants and face lifts. Be careful, however, four Americans have died over the last five years, all receiving liposuction. Just for the record, neither of us visited a medical professional while in Peru.

The Other Couple & A Guitar Player

Lima has its share of great colonial architecture but what separates if from the herd of South American capitals is its cuisine, ranging from great market stall snacks to fine dining. To go to Lima and not try cerviche is to not have been there at all.

Guitar players must have lots of stories to tell, especially ones that go from bar to bar, serenading couples in love in hopes of making some money. This particular player had the kind of weathered face that oozes experience and surely he had been making the rounds in Lima for many years. The bar in question had an equitable amount of memories ingrained in every fiber from which it was made, including the barkeep who had not only made innumerable pisco sours but had certainly seen his share of lovers rendezvousing in the timeless affair. This afternoon found only seven players plying the near antique wooden floors of the local institution known affectionately as El Cordano. Two employees easily handled the small clientele as they surely had for the past thirty years or more. The barman was accomplished if not overly friendly and went about his business in workman-like fashion, doling out drinks and food as was obviously and effortlessly his routine. The near faceless cashier blended into the woodwork and was only noticeable when interacting with his cohort. The guitar player formed a strange but strong camaraderie with a local couple, the woman even joining him in a few superb duets. The couple looked to be in their sixties and seemed too absorbed in one another to be married for the potential forty years their ages would allow. Rather it would appear that they were having an affair of sorts, meeting in perhaps this same place for who knows how long, forming a tryst. Or so the other couple fantasized. The other couple was on the tail end of a trip around Peru and Bolivia, catching their gringo breaths in Lima before flying home. What anyone there thought about them is a matter of conjecture. All they knew was they loved the pisco sours, the timeless atmosphere, and the other characters that helped create it.

one hour later the fog has gone. ´The grew sky is typical for Lima, the foggy clouds are typical for a lot of seaside places....and as quick as it comes it goes as well. That day we had a nice sunny sky and as always high temperatures. Normally in Lima there´s no real winter, it´s never less than 10 degrees (Celsius), just this last winter 2002/2003 I heard about some "real" cold days......that means less than 10 degrees ...:-) but still not less than zero...far away.

That way down through the artists destrict in Barranco is very beautiful. Left and right hand of the way are beautiful little houses, painted in different colours, some of them with restaurant or coffeebar with a fantastic view towards the ocean. Besides shadowgiving trees, much more as you usually find in the streets of Lima.

Most of the travellers I met didn´t like Lima at all. Ok, there are too much other interesting places in Peru, nevertheless Lima as well is a very interesting Metropolis. First we´ve got downtown Lima with a lot of beautiful old buildings, an amazing cathedral next to the "plaza de armas", a lot of other beautiful churches, very interesting museums, in a lot of different districts every kind of nightlife, for example a lot of nice bars in Barranco, little villages and suburbs all around Lima with nice beaches....and so on

My favorite thing about Lima is the people. While a missionary there, I grew to love the people so much for the humble circumstances in which they live in. It has given me a greater understanding and appreciation for what I have, and also inspired me to reach out and help others in this small world of ours more.

Back in 1990 when the terrorist group Shining Path was still running around, I was walking down the street one evening in a little shantytown on the outskirts of Lima. A guy ran past me, then the military whizzed by about 30 seconds later. Then I heard an explosion, and the lights went out and the water was out when I got home. The next day as I was walking to a newsstand, the front page of the news stated that the guy running was a terrorist and he threw a bomb under a car, which knocked the lights and water out. When I turned around, I noticed that the picture on the front page was exactly the corner across from the newstand. There was still blood on the street and wall from the night before. It was quite the experience!
