Street foods in Lima were probably the best in all of Peru. There were hawkers selling everything from slices of pineapple and watermelon to freshly cracked coconut meat. There were so many exotic fruits, it's hard to remember them all like cactus, which was cut open for you after you bought it. Baby beef heart kebabs were another tasty item as well as papa rellenas (a mashed potato filled with spicy meat). But picarones were my favorite. This photo is from a great little cart on the street, just outside the Mercado Central. It was crowded so we were just going to get our order and eat it while walking but the owner insisted we sit down and told a few guys to move over and give us seats. It was quite a show how they formed the dough rings and fried them, turning them with a wooden spoon. The anise-seeded delight was covered with a thin honey syrup just before seving them, piping hot. Beyond delicious and about 30 cents for an order of four!

Wooden balconies are characteristic of Lima architecture. They are part of the Spanish heritage and, besides their aesthetic value, have (had) a practical side. Most of these balconies had wooden strips letting only tiny spaces between them; this way, people from inside could stare at streetlife without being seen from the outside. This was importants in the 18-19th centuries way of life...

    Politics
  • Tip Rating:
  • Now that the corrupt former president Alberto Fujimori is a fugitive, hiding-out in a Tokyo condo, there will hopefully be some positive political changes. (I personally believe that Japan is wrong to not return him) There is much hope for the new president, Alejandro Toledo. He is a 'Cholo,' descendant from the indiginous population. This former Shoeshine boy from Andean Cabana is US educated and has a reputation for his honesty and integrity.

    Shanty Towns
  • Tip Rating:
  • Miles of unplanned 'shantytowns' are being built on the outskirts of town. These towns usually lack proper water and sanitation facilities, and are infested with disease. Lima is overcrowded, yet the people keep coming down from the mountain villages in hope of a better life. I hope the government can do something to fill the needs of the people.

  • The Pisco Sour is the national drink of Peru and can be found all over the country. We observed out bartenders carefully and took diligent notes in order to bring you the following recipe: -- 2 parts Pisco -- 1 part fresh lime juice -- 1 part simple syrup -- 1 egg white -- 3 parts ice -- 2 dashes Angostura bitters Blend and enjoy!

    Local Custom
  • Tip Rating:
  • It was just one of those moments you stumble upon when travelling. Its late in Miraflores, About 9PM in the main plaza a crowd is gathered in a circular type stage. They have a boombox for music and a local chorus is singing while people dance along. I am still not sure what it was all about but it was cool!
